MIRROR-15 Wall Vanity or Picture Light

The Domus MIRROR-15 is an 860 mm tubular wall light — 15 W, 1,590–1,845 lumens, IP40, 120° beam, switchable 3000/4000/5700 K, in black, chrome, satin chrome or white.

⭐ The middle size, and it lands exactly where it should

• ⭐ 15 W producing 1,590 lm at 3000 K is 106 lm/W. ⭐ The 10 W gives 104 and the 20 W gives 105.
• ⭐⭐ A MIDDLE SIZE IS WHERE A FIGURE USUALLY DRIFTS, and this programme has found several families where it has. ⭐ One range publishes a 4000 K output lower than its own 3000 K figure; another has a middle size whose sheet names a different model entirely.
• ⭐ THIS ONE IS CLEAN. ⭐ The lengths step by exactly 280 mm — 580, 860, 1,140 — and efficacy holds within 2% across all three. ⭐ Nothing has been interpolated or carried over.
• ⭐ SO CHOOSE ON LENGTH, NOT OUTPUT. ⭐ The three deliver the same light per millimetre.

⭐ 860 mm — the size that suits most single vanities

• ⭐⭐ A VANITY LIGHT SHOULD BE ABOUT TWO-THIRDS TO THREE-QUARTERS THE WIDTH OF THE MIRROR BELOW IT. ⭐ 860 mm suits a mirror of roughly 1,150–1,300 mm, which is the commonest single-vanity size in a domestic bathroom.
• ⚠ SHORTER LOOKS UNDERSIZED AND A LIGHT WIDER THAN ITS MIRROR LOOKS LIKE A MISTAKE. ⭐ Measure the mirror first, then pick the fitting — not the other way round.
• ⭐ MOUNT IT ABOVE THE MIRROR at roughly 1.9–2.0 m to the centre. ⚠ Too high and the light skims the top of a face; too low and it is in the eye-line of anyone tall.
• ⭐ IF THE MIRROR IS A CABINET WITH A DOOR THAT OPENS UPWARD OR OUTWARD, check the clearance — ⚠ a tubular fitting mounted close above a mirror cabinet is a classic collision.

⚠ A single light above a mirror always casts downward shadows

⭐ Light from directly above puts the brow, nose and chin in shadow. ⭐⭐ THAT IS INHERENT TO TOP LIGHTING RATHER THAN A FAULT IN THE FITTING, and it is the single biggest limitation of any over-mirror light. ⭐ For shaving or makeup, a pair of vertical lights either side of the mirror lights a face evenly, because the light arrives from both sides at eye level. ⭐ The best arrangement is both: this fitting for general illumination and verticals for the face. ⚠ If only one is possible and the mirror is used for detailed work, the verticals are the better choice.

⚠ IP40 is not a wet-area rating

⭐ IP4X keeps out objects over 1 mm; IPX0 means no water protection at all. ⭐⭐ DESPITE BEING SOLD AS A VANITY LIGHT, THIS CANNOT GO WHERE WATER MAY REACH IT. ⭐ Above a basin mirror on a dry wall is normally fine; ⛔ over a bath or within a shower enclosure is not. ⚠ Confirm the zone with your electrician against the current wiring rules. ⭐ The solids half earns its keep though — IP4X keeps out the dust and lint that would otherwise settle inside a tubular diffuser and show as shadows along its length.

⭐ CRI ≥80 and the colour setting

• ⭐ CRI ≥80 is adequate for general lighting and it is the minimum you would want at a mirror — ⭐ the one place in a house where people judge colour on their own face.
• ⚠ SKIN TONES ARE WHAT LOW-CRI LIGHT RENDERS WORST, ⭐ because the deep reds that give skin its warmth are what a cheap phosphor under-represents.
• ⭐ THE COLOUR SETTING HELPS MORE THAN THE CRI HERE. ⭐ 4000 K is the usual right answer at a mirror: 3000 K is flattering but misleading about how you will look outdoors, and 5700 K is accurate but unkind.
• ⭐ IT IS SET BY A DIP SWITCH ON THE SIDE END CAP, ⭐ so it can be changed without dismantling the fitting — worth trying both 3000 and 4000 K in place before deciding.

⭐ Adjustable knuckles — it doubles as a picture light

⭐ A ridged aluminium body with a tubular opal-frost polycarbonate diffuser and chrome adjustable knuckles. ⭐⭐ THE TUBE ROTATES, so the 120° beam can be aimed down a wall rather than straight out — ⭐ which is what makes it work over a picture or an artwork as well as over a mirror. ⭐ Set the aim on site with the light on; a few degrees changes where the wash lands. ⛔ Not dimmable — do not put it on a dimmer circuit.
