Verso Table Lamp

The Verso TL is a 425 mm table lamp with an oval bouclé base and shade — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied — in black, ocean blue, coffee, green basil or ivory.

Bouclé on both the base and the shade — and our record had dropped it

The listing said “Iron, Plastic”, which describes the structure and misses the product. Bouclé — the looped, nubbly upholstery weave — covers both the shade and the base. That is unusual: most fabric lamps put fabric on the shade and metal or ceramic underneath. Covering both makes the Verso read as a piece of soft furniture that lights up rather than as a lamp, which is exactly what it is for.

Oval, not round

The base and shade are both oval — the shade is 350 mm across and 235 mm high on a base 230 mm by 130 mm. An oval sits against a wall better than a circle: it presents its width to the room and its narrow side to the wall, so it takes less depth on a console or a bedside table than a 350 mm round shade would.

Five colours, all of them soft

Black, ocean blue, coffee, green basil and ivory. On bouclé, colour behaves differently from colour on a flat fabric — the loops catch light at their tips and hold shadow between them, so every shade reads as slightly heathered rather than flat. Ocean blue and green basil are genuinely uncommon in a lit product.

The light it gives

Through a bouclé shade the light is soft and diffuse — a thick, textured weave scatters more than a thin fabric does. It is an ambient lamp, not a reading lamp: bright enough to make a corner warm, not focused enough to read by for long. Only 0.9 kg, so it is easy to move and easy to knock.

Dimming depends on the globe

Fit a dimmable E27 and use a plug-in or inline dimmer and it dims; a plain globe will not. Our record carries no value at all against dimmable. On a lamp bought for atmosphere, dimming is worth having.
