Velice Table Lamp

The Velice TL is a 370 mm table lamp with a woven paper raffia shade on a satin metal base — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied — in vintage brass, black or white.

Raffia, and the record carried no material at all

The shade is woven paper raffia — the reason to buy this lamp, and it was absent from our data entirely. A raffia weave passes light through itself in a fine irregular pattern, so the shade glows and shows its texture instead of simply blocking light. Against a plain wall that texture is most of the effect.

The small one of a pair

Velice and Claris share the same shade and the same three finishes. The difference is size:

• Velice — 370 mm tall, 250 mm shade, on a 160 mm base at 1.1 kg. A bedside proportion — the shade sits below eye level when you are sitting up in bed.
• Claris — 570 mm tall, 300 mm shade. A console proportion, and too tall for a low bedside table.

If you want both, they are the same lamp at two heights — which is a genuinely useful pairing for a bedroom and a hall.

Three finishes on a natural shade

The shade is natural on all three, so what you choose is the base. Vintage brass is warm metal under a warm weave — the pairing the lamp was designed around. Black makes the base recede so the shade appears to float. White is quietest. All satin.

Light, and worth knowing

1.1 kg. A raffia shade over a hollow base is light by definition — easy to move, and easy to knock off a narrow shelf. If you need weight at a bedside, the ceramic and cast-stone lamps in this range are the ones.

Dimming depends on the globe

Fit a dimmable E27 and use a plug-in or inline dimmer and it dims; a plain globe will not. Our record says “No”, which is misleading — the correct answer is globe dependent. Through raffia, dimming is worth having: at low output the weave is all you see.
