Varlin Table Lamp

The Varlin TL3 is a 550 mm three-light table lamp with speckled mirrored glass shades in black — three G9 globes to 6 W each, not supplied, on 1.8 metres of flex.

Speckled mirrored glass — and what it actually does

This is the whole reason to buy a Varlin, and it needs explaining because mirrored glass is a strange thing to put on a light. A mirrored shade reflects rather than transmits, so most of the light stays inside it. The speckles are the trick — they are points where the mirroring is absent, so light escapes through them as scattered pinpricks.

The result is three small constellations rather than three lit shades: the glass reads dark and reflective, catching the room, while fine points of light escape from it. On a table lamp, at close range, that effect is far more visible than it is from a ceiling — you can actually see the individual points.

550 mm tall, on a 150 mm base

185 mm wide, with 120 mm shades, on a 150 mm base only 25 mm thick, at 1.8 kg. The low flat base is where the weight sits, which is what keeps a 550 mm lamp steady on a small footprint — noticeably more stable than the Valtor table lamp's 1.07 kg on 90 mm.

Three globes to buy, and they matter here

Three G9 to 6 W each — 18 W in total, none supplied. Because light escapes through speckles rather than a diffuser, the quality of the point source shows:

• Use three identical globes — three slightly different whites across three shades is obvious at table height.
• Choose warm, 2700 K. The escaping pinpricks read as candlelight when warm and as LED indicator lights when cool.
• A compact clear G9 concentrates the effect better than a frosted one.

Part of a five-piece range

Varlin runs as three pendant sizes, this table lamp and a floor lamp, all in the same speckled mirrored glass. That is unusually complete, and with a look this distinctive, repeating it at two or three heights works far better than mixing it with anything else.

• Bedrooms, dimmed low, where the speckles are the whole effect.
