Varlin Floor Lamp

The Varlin FL5 is a 1,600 mm five-light floor lamp in black with speckled mirrored glass shades — five G9 globes to 6 W each, not supplied — on 2 metres of flex.

Speckled mirrored glass — and what it actually does

This is the reason to buy a Varlin, and it needs explaining because mirrored glass is a strange thing to put on a light. A mirrored shade reflects rather than transmits: most of the light stays inside it. The speckles are the trick — they are points where the mirroring is absent, so light escapes through them as scattered pinpricks.

The effect is five small constellations rather than five lit shades: the glass reads as dark and reflective, catching the room, while fine points of light escape from it. That is what our copy meant by “atmospheric”, and it is genuinely unlike anything else in this catalogue.

1.6 metres tall, on a 230 mm base

1,600 mm high, 230 mm across, on a 230 mm base only 25 mm thick, at 4.6 kg. That weight in a low flat base is what keeps a 1.6-metre lamp upright on a small footprint — and at 4.6 kg it is one of the more stable floor lamps in this range, where several weigh under a kilogram. The shades are 120 mm each.

Five globes to buy, and they matter here

Five G9 to 6 W each — 30 W in total, none supplied. Because light escapes through speckles rather than a diffuser, the quality of the point source shows:

• Use five identical globes — five slightly different whites across five shades is obvious.
• Choose warm, 2700 K. The escaping pinpricks read as candlelight when warm and as LED indicator lights when cool.
• A compact clear G9 concentrates the effect better than a frosted one.

Varlin runs as three pendant sizes, a table lamp and this floor lamp, all in the same speckled mirrored glass. That is unusually complete, and it means a room can carry the same effect at three heights — which with a look this distinctive is more effective than mixing it with anything else.
