⭐⭐ The cheapest exterior lighting position on a property that has a pier

• ⭐ A pillar mount sits on top of an existing masonry pier — a gate post, a fence pier, a wall return.
• ⭐⭐ EVERY OTHER EXTERIOR ARRANGEMENT NEEDS SOMETHING BUILT. ⭐ A post needs a footing dug and poured; a wall bracket needs a wall in the right place; a bollard needs a footing and a cable trench. ⭐ A pillar mount needs a pier that is already there.
• ⭐ SO ON A PROPERTY WITH MASONRY GATE PIERS, IT IS BOTH THE MOST ECONOMICAL POSITION AND USUALLY THE BEST ONE — ⭐ the pier is already at the entrance, already the visual marker, and already a natural place for a light.
• ⚠ WHAT IT STILL NEEDS IS A CABLE ROUTE. ⭐ Getting a supply to the top of a solid masonry pier is straightforward if a conduit was built in and a real problem if it was not. ⭐ Check before specifying; surface conduit up a pier is conspicuous.

⭐ Check the pier top before ordering

• ⭐ The lantern is 310 mm wide. ⭐⭐ THE PIER TOP MUST BE LARGER THAN THAT AND FLAT. ⭐ A capped pier with a moulded or pitched top needs the cap worked or a spreader plate, which is masonry work rather than electrical.
• ⭐ A TYPICAL BRICK PIER IS 350 mm SQUARE (one and a half bricks), which suits it; a single brick pier at 230 mm does not. ⭐ Measure before ordering.
• ⭐ PROPORTION MATTERS AS MUCH AS FIT. ⭐ A 660 mm lantern on a 1.2 m pier is a third of the pier's height again, which reads as generous; the same lantern on a 2 m pier looks small. ⭐ The Large family exists for the taller piers.
• ⚠ And a pier-top lantern is exposed on all sides — ⭐ there is nothing sheltering it, which matters for an IP43 fitting.

⭐ "Large" is a separate sub-family

⭐ The Large range uses bracket reference GT-481 where the standard uses GT-421, and its family prose lists only one post height — 2.45 m single, with no twin or triple option. ⭐⭐ SO IF A SCHEME NEEDS A TWIN-HEAD POST SOMEWHERE, THE STANDARD RANGE DOES IT AND THE LARGE DOES NOT. ⭐ Decide the largest arrangement first, then pick the family. ⚠ Do not mix the two sizes on one property — a 660 mm lantern beside a 520 mm one reads as a mistake rather than a hierarchy.

⭐ IP43 on the most exposed position in the range

• ⭐ IP43 covers spraying water to 60° from vertical. ⛔ Not driving rain, hosing or sprinklers.
• ⭐⭐ A PIER TOP IS THE MOST EXPOSED POSITION ANY OF THESE ARRANGEMENTS OCCUPIES. ⭐ There is no eave, no wall and nothing around it to break the wind, so wind-driven rain reaches it from every direction.
• ⭐ THE LANTERN'S OWN BODY IS THE ONLY SHELTER IT HAS. ⭐ On an exposed or coastal site, expect water to find it eventually and check the seals as part of any maintenance.
• ⭐ Seal the base to the pier properly at installation — ⭐ water sitting between the fitting and the masonry is what corrodes the fixing, and it is the point nobody inspects.

⭐ B22, no lamp, and opal on a pier top

⭐ The lamp is not included. ⭐⭐ A PIER-TOP LANTERN IS SEEN FROM EVERY DIRECTION AND FROM THE ROAD, which makes the lamp choice more visible than on any wall arrangement. ⭐ A clear or filament lamp is a bright point at the entrance, glary from a car and from the footpath. ⭐ An opal B22 fills the larger lantern and reads as a glowing object. ⭐ On a 660 mm lantern the diffuser volume is substantial, so a globe-shaped lamp sized to fill it works better than a compact one sitting low. ⭐ Warm rather than cool.

⭐ In pairs, almost always

⭐ Gate piers come in pairs, and so should the lanterns. ⭐⭐ THAT MEANS TWO LAMPS THAT MUST MATCH: bought from one batch and replaced together, because the two piers are seen side by side and a difference in colour or brightness between them is unmissable. ⭐ It also means two cable routes, which is worth confirming before specifying rather than after.
