Product Description
xThe Thirlo EXS is a 278 mm exterior wall light with a built-in motion sensor, in black or white — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied, IP44, projecting 117 mm.
⚠ It has a motion sensor, and no source tells you how the sensor behaves. That is the honest position, and it matters more here than on any other fitting, because on a sensor light the sensor is the product.
None of the following is recorded anywhere — not in the datasheet, not in our product record, not on the old page:
- Detection range — how far away it picks you up. The difference between 3 metres and 12 is the difference between a doorway light and a driveway one.
- Detection angle — whether it watches a narrow approach or a wide arc.
- Time delay — how long it stays on. Fixed, or adjustable?
- Daylight threshold — whether it stays off in daylight, and whether that is adjustable.
- Manual override — whether flicking the switch off and on holds it permanently on, which most sensor fittings allow and which is the feature people actually use.
Ask us before you buy. We will get the sensor specification from Telbix, because whether this fitting suits your front door depends entirely on figures nobody published.
What a sensor light is actually for — and what to expect
A motion-activated light at an entry does two things a switched one cannot:
- Your hands are full. It comes on as you approach with shopping, a child or a dog.
- It only runs when something moves. Over a year that is a real saving against a light left on all night — and it is far less intrusive to neighbours.
⚠ Two things worth knowing before you commit to a sensor fitting at all:
- Sensors trigger on things that are not you. Cats, possums, moving foliage and cars turning in a street all set them off. Position matters — aim it across an approach rather than out at a road.
- They are not a security light. A 25 W E27 at an entry marks and welcomes; it does not floodlight a yard. If you want deterrence, ask us about the flood lights in this range.
The globe is yours — which is unusual on a sensor fitting
One E27 to 25 W, not supplied. Most sensor lights come with a sealed integrated LED; the Thirlo takes a standard screw-in globe, and that has real consequences:
- You choose the output. A brighter globe makes it a genuine entry light; a modest one makes it a marker.
- You choose the colour. Use warm 2700 K at a front door — cool white makes an entry look like a car park.
- You can replace it in ten years, where a sealed sensor light is finished when its diode is.
⚠ But choose an LED rated for SENSOR use. This is the one globe caution specific to this fitting, and no source gave it. A sensor switches the globe on and off many times a day, and cheap LEDs can flicker, buzz, glow faintly when off, or fail early on a sensor circuit. Some are explicitly marked “not for use with electronic switches or sensors”. Ask us and we will supply one that is rated for it. Also use one rated for enclosed fittings — the Thirlo is a sealed glass body.
⚠ On dimming, we would rather warn you than answer. The datasheet says globe dependent and our record says “No”. In practice, sensor fittings and wall dimmers rarely work together — the sensor module generally needs full mains voltage to operate, and a dimmed supply can stop it triggering or make it behave erratically. Do not fit this to a dimmer without asking us first.
IP44, and a slim body
IP44 — protection against splashing water from any direction, and our page has it right at “Outdoor (Covered Area)”: under a porch, a verandah or a deep eave — yes; a fully exposed wall taking driving rain — no.
⚠ That matters more on a sensor fitting than a plain one, because the sensor lens is a second thing weather can reach. For exposed positions, ask us — the Walsh is IP65, though without a sensor.
82 mm wide, 278 mm tall, 117 mm out, 0.925 kg. That is a genuinely slim exterior fitting — the Ramiro coach lantern is 200 mm wide and reaches 280 mm out. So the Thirlo suits a narrow entry, a doorframe reveal or a tight porch, and at under a kilogram it fixes to render or fibre cement without special provision.
Black or white
- Black — recedes at night and against dark render, brick or timber.
- White — disappears against a light-rendered or weatherboard wall by day, which on an entry facade is often the quieter choice.

- Narrow entries — only 82 mm wide.

Questions
How far away does the sensor detect me?
No source records it — and that is the honest answer. Detection range, detection angle, time delay, daylight threshold and manual override are all absent from the datasheet, our record and the old page. No. A 25 W E27 at an entry marks and welcomes; it does not floodlight a yard. If you want deterrence, ask us about the flood lights in this range.
Can it go on an exposed wall?
No — IP44 is splashing water, not driving rain, so under a porch, verandah or deep eave only. That matters more on a sensor fitting than a plain one, because the sensor lens is a second thing weather can reach. For exposed positions ask us about the Walsh at IP65, though it has no sensor.
Why choose one that takes a globe?
Because most sensor lights have a sealed integrated LED. With a standard E27 you choose the output and the colour, and you can replace it in ten years — where a sealed sensor light is finished when its diode is.

For all warranty claims please ensure you have your proof of purchase at hand, an invoice from your electrician from the installation and check the faulty product is within the applicable warranty period. Warranty is replacement only.
Lights For You is not responsible for damages caused by unprofessional installation, modified products or manipulated by the customer or by any other person not authorised by the manufacturer; as well as by improper use, manipulation and/or short circuits, apparent signs of improper treatment.
Faulty items: lodge warranty directly with the brand (manufacturer). Keep proof of purchase.
Damaged or Missing Items
Notification of any damages or missing items must be received by Lights For You within seven (7) days of receipt of the product. Please email photos to ashfield@lightsforyou.com.au.
If the product is to be repaired or replaced, it must correspond to the one originally sent by Lights For You and the customer must include the delivery note and/or invoice.
Returns
Change of Mind Returns
- Customers who wish to return a product due to a change of mind or cancelled order may do so within thirty (30) days of receipt.
- The customer is responsible for the shipping costs for a change of mind return, irrespective of any free, discounted or any other type of shipping promotion that may have been applicable at the time of your order. This includes any costs you incur for us shipping the product to you in the first place and the cost of shipping the product back to us.

Our Rights
We reserve the right to refuse a return in cases where we cannot be reasonably satisfied that you purchased the product from us or where we are not responsible for the damage in accordance with our Faults & damages policy.
Cancellations
Customers who wish to cancel all or part of an order due to change of mind or incorrectly ordered may do subject to cancelling in within 12 hours, during business hours from time of purchase. Once products have been shipped, you cannot cancel them.
