⚠ It stands 280 millimetres off the wall. Plan for that first. That is far deeper than most — the Farnix reaches 254 mm, the Cosca 170, the Mazal 75. (The Ramiro EX25 coach lantern is deeper still at 350 mm, if you want more reach.)

Nearly 30 centimetres of reach is the point of a coach lantern: it holds the light out over a doorway or a path rather than flat against the wall, which is how the type has always worked. But it also means:

• Beside a front door, check it clears the door swing and the architrave.
• Along a path or a passage, it is something you can walk into in the dark. Mount it above head height, or use the 180 mm version.
• On a narrow entry, it will dominate. Measure before you order.

At 3.5 kg on a 280 mm reach, the fixing also takes real leverage, not just dead weight. Tell your electrician both figures.

All four Pedrals take the same single E27 globe to 25 W. The 230 mm gives no more light than the 180 mm — the lantern simply grows. Choose the large one because 230 mm is the proportion the entry needs, not for output. If you want more light, use two lanterns or a brighter globe, not a bigger body.

That means the globe still matters, and no source said a word about it. One E27 to 25 W, not supplied:

• A decorative LED filament — a globe or ST64 shape — is what a coach lantern is designed around. Behind textured glass it reads as a warm glowing core, which is exactly right.
• A bare white capsule gives a hard bright blob you can see through the texture.
• Use an LED rated for ENCLOSED fittings. This is a sealed lantern, and heat with nowhere to go is what kills LED globes — many are rated for open fittings only, and it is printed on the box.
• Warm 2700 K. A coach lantern in cool white looks like a security light.

It also dims, with the right globe. Our record says “No”; the datasheet and our own page both say globe dependent, and they are right. On a lantern with a visible warm core, dimming is the best thing you can do for how it looks after dark.

IP44 — and our page gets this right, saying “Outdoor (Covered Area)”. IP44 is splashing water from any direction, not driving rain or jets: under a porch, a verandah or a deep eave — yes; a fully exposed or coastal wall — no. For those, ask us about the Walsh (IP65, solid brass or 316 stainless).

Backplate 140 mm on a 230 mm fitting, so on a replacement it may not cover the marks left behind — measure first. Class I — earth required, in aluminium and glass.
