Overton CTC Pendant Light 6Lt in Brass

The Overton is a six-light fitting in solid brass with acid-frost glass, and its useful trick is in the name: CTC, close to ceiling. It can hang as a pendant or mount tight against the ceiling, which makes it one of the few decorative six-light fittings that works in a room without the height for a pendant.

Close to ceiling is the reason to buy it

Most six-light fittings need a void to hang in. This one does not. In a room with a 2.4 m ceiling — a bedroom, a hallway, an apartment living room — a normal pendant is either a head-height obstacle or hung so high it looks stranded. Mounted close to ceiling the Overton gives you the decorative mass without the drop. Decide which way you are mounting it before the electrician arrives; the fixing differs.

Solid brass, not brass-plated

The upper tier is a lattice cut from solid brass laid over the glass. Solid brass ages — it darkens and takes on a patina rather than wearing through to a base metal underneath, which is what plated finishes do at the edges. If you want it to stay bright, it needs occasional polishing; if you leave it, it will mellow. Both are legitimate, but it is a choice you are making.

Six E27 globes, and they are visible through frosted glass

Six holders take E27 globes up to 25 W each — 150 W in total, and none are supplied. The acid-frost glass diffuses them, so plain globes are fine here; you are not looking at bare filaments. Buy all six identical, in one colour temperature.

Where it works

• Rooms with 2.4 m ceilings that still want a decorative six-light fitting, mounted close to ceiling.
• Entry halls and landings, where a low-hanging pendant would be in the way.
• Dining rooms with the height to hang it, using the full 2,000 mm suspension.
• Bedrooms, where 500 mm of diameter fills the ceiling without a long drop.

Specifying it

It is 500 mm wide and 300 mm high, with a 2,000 mm suspension for pendant mounting. Six E27 holders, 25 W each and 150 W total. Dimming is globe dependent. It runs on 240 V, is IP20 and indoor only, and is Class I — an earth is required. Assembly is required, and it is RCM approved. Warranty is three years. Clean it with a dry cloth; solvent cleaners attack the brass and the acid-frost finish.
