Newark four-panel coach wall light in black

The Newark is a traditional four-panel coach lantern in poly powder coated black aluminium with glass panels, standing 340mm tall on a 190mm projection. It is the shape people picture when they think of a coach light: a tapered lantern on a wall bracket, glazed on four sides, throwing light out and down across a door, a porch or a gate pier.

Unlike most modern exterior fittings the Newark is not a sealed LED unit. It takes a replaceable E27 globe, which is what allows the lantern to look the way it does — the light source sits visible behind glass rather than hidden behind a diffuser, and that is the whole aesthetic of the style.

The globe, and why it matters here

An E27 globe is required for the fitting to light. Havit rates the Newark with an LED filament globe at 8W and 700lm, in a warm 2700K, with colour rendering above 80 CRI. A filament globe is the right choice for this lantern for the same reason the glass is clear: the visible element is part of the look, and a flat opal globe behind four glass panels reads as a modern fitting wearing a traditional case.

Because the globe is replaceable, the fitting is also serviceable in a way an integrated LED is not — the lantern outlives its light source, and the colour and output can be changed later by changing the globe rather than the fitting.

Dimming and power

The Newark runs on 240V AC mains and requires no driver. Havit lists it as Triac dimmable, so it works with a conventional LED-rated wall dimmer — though with a replaceable globe, dimming performance depends on the globe fitted as much as on the fitting itself, so the globe should be a dimmable one if the circuit is dimmed.

It is a Class 1 fitting and requires an earth connection, so installation is work for a licensed electrician.

Weather rating and siting

The Newark is rated IP44, which covers splashing water from any direction, and IK04 for impact. That is the appropriate rating for a lantern on a wall under some shelter — beside a door, under an eave, on a porch — rather than one standing fully exposed to driven rain.

Havit applies a siting condition to this fitting: aluminium and 304 stainless fittings must not be installed within 5km of any salt water environment. That is a warranty condition, and a coastal address is the most common reason a claim on an exterior fitting is later declined. Lights For You would rather flag that before you order than after.
