The Nero 912 is a surface-mounted 12 W LED downlight with a honeycomb louvre, in black or white — 920 lm, CRI above 90, a 36° beam, 2700 K / 3000 K / 4000 K, TRIAC dimmable, IP54.

The honeycomb louvre — and why this fitting has one

A honeycomb is a fine cellular grid across the aperture. It does one job: it cuts the view of the source at an angle while letting the beam through.

On a surface-mounted downlight that is not a nicety. A recessed fitting is set up inside the ceiling, so the plaster itself shields the lamp from a low viewing angle. A surface fitting hangs below the ceiling with its aperture in plain view from across the room — and without a louvre you would see straight into a 920-lumen COB every time you looked up.

With the honeycomb, you see the lit surface below and not the lamp. That is what makes a surface downlight usable in a room people sit in, and it is why this one costs what it does.

CRI above 90 on a 36-degree beam — a genuinely high specification

Two numbers that belong together, and neither was on the page.

• CRI above 90 is a real step above the >80 that almost everything in this catalogue records. Over a kitchen bench, food and timber hold their colour; on art or a feature wall, pigments read true.
• 36° is a defined pool, not a wash — and paired with a COB source, which puts the emitters in one dense array, the edge of that pool is crisp rather than soft.

Three colour temperatures — and the warm end is unusually warm

2700 K / 3000 K / 4000 K, and the 2700 K is worth pointing at: almost every switchable fitting in this catalogue starts at 3000 K. 2700 K is properly warm — the colour of an old incandescent globe — and in a living room, a bedroom or a restaurant-style dining space, it is what makes light feel warm rather than merely not-cold.

IP54, and what it allows

Protection against splashing water, which puts the Nero in a bathroom outside the shower zone or a laundry — and on a concrete bathroom ceiling, where you cannot recess anything, a surface-mounted IP54 downlight is a genuinely useful thing to be able to buy. The page said only “Usage: Indoor”.
