Marvin 1 Light Pendant Light

The Marvin PE1O is a 165 mm single pendant in black with gold — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied, with a 455 mm drop.

What this fitting actually is

Our page carried a general essay about industrial lighting — the Industrial Revolution, wire cages, concrete, reclaimed wood — and never described the product. So, plainly:

The Marvin PE1O is a single-globe pendant, 165 mm across and 455 mm deep, in a black shade with gold — almost certainly a gold interior, which is the usual reason a black pendant is described as black and gold, and which does something specific to the light (see below). It hangs on a 2,000 mm suspension.

Why a gold interior matters, if that is what it is

On a black pendant, the inside of the shade is doing most of the work:

• A black interior absorbs. The fitting reads as a dark silhouette and throws a tight, hard-edged pool straight down, with very little spill.
• A gold or brass interior reflects, and warms. The light bounces off a warm metal on its way out, so the pool is softer at the edges and noticeably warmer in tone than the globe alone would give — and the inside of the shade glows when you are near it, which is most of the appeal.

That is the difference between a black pendant that reads as industrial and hard and one that reads as industrial and warm.

Tall and slim — and what that suits

At 165 mm wide and 455 mm deep, this is the middle of the three Marvins in width and a long drop in proportion:

• Over a kitchen bench in a row — narrow pendants spaced along a bench read as rhythm and keep sightlines clear across the room. A row of broad pendants reads as a lid.
• Above a bedside table, one each side — it frees the surface entirely.
• Singly in an entry or a hallway end.
• Over a narrow table or a breakfast bar.

⚠ At 455 mm deep it hangs a long way down. Over a dining table it will sit in the sightline unless hung high; over a bench, where people stand, that depth is exactly what you want.

The globe — and one thing we cannot tell you

• Kitchen benches, in rows — narrow, so sightlines stay clear.
• Above bedside tables, one each side.
• Entries, hallway ends and narrow tables.
