Landis 60Cm CTC Ceiling Light

The Landis CTC60 is a 600 mm crystal close-to-ceiling light in chrome or gold — 46 W giving 4,830 lm, with switchable 3000 K / 4000 K / 5000 K, TRIAC dimmable.

Crystal, and why a close-to-ceiling one is a different proposition

A crystal chandelier hangs into a room and is seen from the side, which is how crystal is usually designed to work — light passing through facets at eye level.

A close-to-ceiling crystal fitting is seen almost entirely from below. What that gives you is different and arguably better in a normal room: the crystal throws refracted light and pattern down and outward onto the ceiling and the walls, so the room carries the sparkle rather than the fitting. In a 2.4-metre-ceilinged bedroom or living room, where a chandelier would be an obstruction, this achieves the same effect without hanging into the space.

4,830 lumens at 105 lumens per watt

That is a lot of light and a high efficiency for a crystal fitting, where the facets normally cost you output. The 50 cm version independently gives 101 lm/W, so the two sizes confirm each other.

4,830 lm will light a large living room or a big bedroom on its own — which is unusual for a decorative crystal fitting, and it means the Landis does not need supporting downlights the way most chandeliers do.

Chrome or gold — and it changes the crystal

Chrome is cool and neutral: it reflects the crystal's own refraction back as white sparkle, and the fitting reads contemporary. Gold is warm: it tints the reflected light, so the same crystal reads softer, richer and more traditional. On a fitting where most of what you see is reflection, the metal choice changes the whole character.

The larger of two

Landis also comes at 500 mm, 36 W, 3,648 lm and 8 kg. Both project 186 mm and both mount to an 80 mm canopy. The 600 mm suits a room of about 5 by 5 metres and up; below that the 500 is better proportioned.

Where it works

• Large living rooms and bedrooms — as the only light.
• Standard-height ceilings, where a chandelier would be an obstruction.
• Rooms where you want sparkle on the walls rather than a hanging object.
