Karter Black Wall Light

The Karter is the wide twin-globe lantern in Havit’s galvanised-iron range, and at 453 mm tall on a broad 295 mm body it is the second-largest fitting of the nine. Two lamps set side by side inside one glass-sided housing give it a horizontal emphasis the single-globe lanterns do not have, which is what makes it work over a wide entry or a garage opening where a tall narrow shape looks stranded.

⚠ Two globes, and the spec figures are per globe

It takes 2 × 4 W E14 LED filament globes, each giving 300 lumens at 2700K with a 120° spread. Havit prints those numbers per globe, so a summary spec can appear to describe a 4 W, 300-lumen fitting. It is not: the Karter draws about 8 W in total and produces roughly 600 lumens, which puts it between the 300-lumen accent lanterns and the 700-lumen single-globe ones.

Both lamps are replaceable and both use the smaller E14 candle base rather than the E27 used by most of this range — worth noting before buying spares. Havit’s maximum for this fitting is 40 W per globe holder, lower than the 60 W permitted on the E27 lanterns, so a figure carried across from a Felix or an Ashton would be wrong.

⚠ Not to be installed near salt water

Havit states the Karter is not suitable for installation in coastal areas or environments exposed to salt water. The exclusion carries no distance qualifier, so it applies to any site where salt air reaches the fitting. Galvanised iron is zinc-coated steel and salt strips the zinc; once that is gone the steel goes quickly, regardless of the powder coat over it. For coastal work the correct materials are 316 stainless steel or solid brass.

Away from the coast the limit is weather exposure. IP44 is a splash rating, so the Karter needs an eave, porch roof or covered entry above it. Impact resistance is IK02, which suits domestic positions rather than public ones.

Supply, dimming and installation

It runs directly on 240 V mains — there is no driver in it and none required — and both globes are Triac dimmable together from a single wall dimmer, with Havit’s HV9625 300 W dial dimmer as the matched control. Wiring is parallel, so the two lamps run independently and one failing leaves the other lit. It is Protection Class 1 and requires an earth at the point.

Havit makes two assembly steps warranty conditions: rubber pads on every glass tab before the glass is seated, and a silicone bead around the edge of the fitting after mounting, which is the seal that keeps water away from the terminals. CRI is above 80 and colour is held within SDCM 5 — useful in a twin-lamp fitting, where any mismatch between the two globes would be visible side by side.
