Jonsel 50Cm Pendant Light

The Jonsel PE50 is a 500 mm pendant with a stretched fabric shade in black or white — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied, on a 2,000 mm suspension.

The elastic shade — and at 500 mm it does the most work

Soft fabric stretched over a frame, not a stiff drum. Thin and under tension, so it is translucent: the shade glows across its whole surface rather than only throwing light out of the top and bottom.

At 500 mm that becomes the whole point. This is a large glowing form — half a metre of softly lit surface — and the stretch gives it a seamless curve with no visible ribs or frame, which at this scale is what separates it from a traditional drum shade. A rigid shade this size shows its structure; this one does not.

The largest of three, and the one for a dining table

500 mm wide, shade 325 mm high. Jonsel comes in three sizes, and this is the one with the presence to hang singly over a dining table or in a double-height entry, where the 200 mm works in runs and the 300 mm suits a small table.

Black or white — and at this size the difference is large

On a translucent shade the colour changes what the fitting does:

• White — half a metre of glowing surface pushing light into the room from every part of it. Soft, ambient, and it fills a space. It also makes the pendant read as a large luminous object, which over a table is a strong presence.
• Black — very little passes through the fabric, so nearly all the output goes down onto the table. A focused pool with a dark form above it — much more dramatic, and the room around it stays darker.

At 200 mm that choice is a nuance. At 500 mm it is two completely different rooms.

Where it works

• Over dining tables, singly — the size with presence.
• Entries and stairwells, where a large soft form suits.
• Living rooms, in white, as an ambient centrepiece.
• ⚠ White glows and fills the room; black throws its light down. Choose on effect.
• ⚠ Ask us for the overall height if the clearance is tight.

One E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied; dimming is globe dependent. 240 V, Class I — earth required, IP20 — indoor and dry locations only. Warranty is three years, as a replacement warranty.
