Curva Solid Brass LED Step Light

The Curva comes in three sizes on one body, and this is the smallest of them — a solid brass step light at 3 W, and the least expensive way into the range. Brass is the point here. It is not a coated finish that can chip; it is solid metal that will weather naturally to a deeper tone over years outdoors, which some people specify deliberately and others should know about before it happens.

Which Curva to buy

All three share the same curved face, the same frosted glass diffuser and the same mounting, so the only real decision is output. This 3 W model gives 240 lm, 245 lm and 250 lm across its three colour settings — enough to mark a step edge clearly without lighting the garden, which is what most domestic stairs actually want. The 5 W and 7.5 W models step up from there for wide treads and landings. Buying the brightest by default is the common mistake: at ankle height, surplus output reads as glare.

Wiring it

It runs on 12 V DC constant voltage, so the driver must be a constant-voltage type — a constant-current driver is a different device and will not run it properly. Wiring is parallel and the fitting is Protection Class 3, no earth required, which keeps a run along a stair or a wall simple. At 3 W each, a great many fit on one driver; size it on total load with headroom rather than at its ceiling, and give it a position that suits its own IP rating rather than burying it.

It dims, but the driver has to as well

The Curva is Triac dimmable, which is unusual in a step light and genuinely useful on an entry or terrace stair. Because the fitting runs at 12 V DC, the dimming happens upstream at the driver — so the driver must itself be a Triac-dimmable 12 V DC constant-voltage unit, and the wall dimmer a compatible leading-edge type. Pair a dimmable fitting with an ordinary driver and you get no dimming at best, flicker or buzz at worst, and the fitting takes the blame for the driver's limitation.

Specifying it

The 3 W LED is built in — no globe, no socket. Tri-colour switching across 3000 K, 4000 K and 5500 K is set once at installation. IP65 covers direct rain and hose wash-down, and IK06 gives it some impact tolerance at shin height. CRI above 80, frosted glass diffuser, solid brass.

Lights For You stocks the Curva in solid brass, antique brass, black and white. If you want the brass to stay bright rather than patinate, plan on wiping it down occasionally — left alone outdoors it will darken, and that is the material behaving normally rather than a fault.
