Seevive LED Step Light Tri Colour Rectangular

The Seevive is a rectangular surface-mounted step light in polycarbonate rather than aluminium, and that material choice is the reason to specify it. Polycarb does not corrode, does not tea-stain and has no paint film to chip when a shoe catches it — which matters on a step, because a step light is the one fitting in a garden that gets kicked.

This is a 12V DC fitting and it needs a driver

Both order codes run on 12 V DC only and require a 12 V DC LED driver sized for every fitting on the run. The datasheet carries the warning in capitals — do not connect the fitting directly to 240 V. Doing so destroys it immediately and is not a warranty claim. As a low-voltage circuit no earth is needed at the fitting, which is why a stair flight or a path edge with six of these runs neatly from one central driver.

• External stair flights and terrace steps, mounted on the riser to wash the tread below.
• Path and retaining walls at ankle height, where a polycarb body survives being knocked.
• Poolside and coastal steps — IP65 covers direct rain and hose wash-down, and polycarb ignores salt.

Specifying it

The 5 W LED is built in — there is no globe and no socket, so nothing needs replacing over the fitting's life. Tri-colour switching is set once at installation across 3000 K, 4000 K and 5500 K, giving 150 lm, 155 lm and 160 lm across the three settings on a 120° beam. That is a deliberately low output: a step light is meant to show you where the step is, not to light the garden, and anything brighter at ankle height becomes glare. It is not dimmable. IP65, polycarbonate body in black or white at the same price.

Sizing the driver

Add up the wattage of every fitting on the circuit — six Seevive fittings draw 30 W — and choose a 12 V DC driver comfortably above that figure rather than exactly on it, so it is not running at its ceiling on a hot day. Give the driver a location that suits its own IP rating: most are rated for a protected position, not for burial or direct weather, so a cavity, a meter box or a weatherproof enclosure is the usual answer. Long low-voltage runs also drop volts along the cable, so on a substantial flight it is worth feeding from a point near the middle of the run rather than from one end.

Setting the colour temperature

Tri-colour is a switch on the fitting, not something changed later from inside the house, so set every fitting on a flight to the same value before it goes in. For steps and paths, 3000 K reads warm and domestic and hides less of the garden; 5500 K is crisper and more commercial. Mismatched settings along one flight are the most visible mistake on this type of fitting and the most tedious to correct.

Supplied by Lights For You — on a stair flight, mount every fitting the same distance above the tread rather than the same distance below the nosing, because treads vary and the eye reads the line of light.
