Hommer Floor Lamp

The Hommer FL is a 1,580 mm floor lamp with a 400 mm fabric shade — black with beige or natural with ivory — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied, on 2 metres of flex.

7.6 kilograms — and that is the reason to buy it

This is by a wide margin the heaviest floor lamp in this catalogue. For comparison: the Varlin is 4.6 kg, the Valora 3.8 kg, and several are under a kilogram.

On a 1.58-metre lamp, weight is not a specification — it is whether the thing stays upright. At 7.6 kg on a 285 mm base, the Hommer is genuinely difficult to knock over, which matters if there are children, dogs, or a walkway anywhere near it. Nothing a customer could read said so.

A 400 mm shade — and what that gives you

400 mm wide by 370 mm high, in fabric. That is a large drum, and on a floor lamp it does two things: it puts a wide, soft pool of light onto the floor and the seat below, and it throws a broad wash up onto the ceiling. The result is ambient rather than directional — the light fills a corner rather than picking something out.

The shade is opaque, so the globe is completely hidden and none of the light escapes sideways into your eyes when you are sitting beside it.

1,580 mm tall — correctly, for reading

At that height the bottom of the shade sits above a seated head, which is exactly where a reading lamp should be: light comes down over the shoulder onto the page rather than into the face. A shorter lamp beside the same chair puts the shade in your eyeline.

Black with beige, or natural with ivory

Black base with a beige shade is the sharper, more contemporary pairing — the base reads as a dark line and the shade glows above it. Natural base with an ivory shade is much softer and more tonal, closer to a single warm object, and it is the one that suits bohemian, coastal and French-provincial rooms.
