GT-504 Siena Sphere Exterior Pillar Mount

The Domus GT-504 Siena sphere pillar mount is a pier-top exterior light — Ø170 mm sphere on a 430 mm high mount, 300 mm wide, E27, 240 V, IP43, in five colours.

⭐ A sphere reads the same from every direction — which is the point on a pier

• ⭐⭐ A GATE PIER IS APPROACHED FROM SEVERAL ANGLES: from the road, from the drive, from the footpath and from inside the property.
• ⭐ A LANTERN HAS A FRONT, SIDES AND A BACK, so it is composed for one viewpoint and is compromised from the others. ⭐ A sphere has no orientation at all — it presents the identical silhouette from every approach.
• ⭐ THAT ALSO REMOVES A DECISION AT INSTALLATION. ⭐ There is no “which way should it face”, and no chance of the pair on two piers being rotated differently from each other — which on lanterns is a small error that is very visible once you notice it.

⭐ Pillar mounting is the cheapest exterior position on a property that has a pier

• ⭐⭐ EVERY OTHER EXTERIOR ARRANGEMENT NEEDS SOMETHING BUILT. ⭐ A post needs a footing dug and poured; a wall bracket needs a wall in the right place; a bollard needs a footing and a trench. ⭐ A pillar mount needs a pier that is already there.
• ⚠ WHAT IT STILL NEEDS IS A CABLE ROUTE. ⭐ Getting a supply to the top of a solid masonry pier is straightforward if a conduit was built in and a real problem if it was not. ⭐ Check before specifying — surface conduit up a pier is conspicuous.
• ⭐ AND CHECK THE PIER TOP. ⭐ The mount is 300 mm wide, so the pier top must be larger than that and flat. ⭐ A brick-and-a-half pier at about 350 mm suits it; ⚠ a single-brick pier at 230 mm does not. ⚠ A capped pier with a moulded or pitched top needs the cap worked or a spreader plate, which is masonry work rather than electrical.
• ⭐ PROPORTION MATTERS AS MUCH AS FIT. ⭐ A 430 mm mount on a 1.2 m pier adds a third again to its height, which reads as generous; on a 2 m pier it looks modest.

⚠ IP43 on the most exposed position in the range

• ⭐ THE SPHERE HELPS HERE TOO: a curved surface sheds water in every direction rather than holding it in a horizontal seam, which is where a lantern usually lets water in.
• ⭐ SEAL THE BASE TO THE PIER PROPERLY AT INSTALLATION. ⚠ Water sitting between the fitting and the masonry is what corrodes the fixing, and it is the point nobody inspects.

⭐ E27, no lamp, and opal is the only sensible choice

⭐ The lamp is not included. ⭐⭐ IN A SPHERE THE LAMP IS VISIBLE FROM EVERY ANGLE AND THERE IS NOWHERE FOR IT TO HIDE, so a clear or filament lamp is a bright point at the entrance — glary from a car, from the footpath and from neighbouring properties. ⭐ An opal E27 fills the sphere and turns it into a single glowing object, which is the entire effect this fitting exists for. ⚠ A globe-shaped lamp sized to fill the Ø170 mm sphere works better than a compact one sitting low, which lights the bottom half and leaves the top dim. ⭐ Warm rather than cool: at an entrance, cool white reads as institutional.

⭐ Gate piers come in pairs, and so should the spheres. ⭐⭐ THAT MEANS TWO LAMPS THAT MUST MATCH: bought from one batch and replaced together, because the two piers are seen side by side and a difference in colour or brightness between them is unmissable. ⭐ It also means two cable routes, which is worth confirming before specifying rather than after. ⭐ The sheet names related references — GT-502 and GT-503 wall brackets, and the GT-544/545 — so the Siena shape can carry across a property.
