Elwick Floor Lamp

The Elwick FL is a 1,540 mm floor lamp on a marble base with an iron body and a glass shade — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied — in black with smoke glass or green.

Marble, glass and iron — none of which was on record

Our listing carried no material at all. The Elwick is marble at the base, iron through the body, glass at the shade — three materials doing three jobs. The marble is the reason to buy it: real stone at floor level gives the lamp 6.75 kg of weight exactly where a 1.54 metre lamp needs it, and it is what separates the Elwick from a metal-based lamp of the same shape.

6.75 kg, which is the practical point

Most slender floor lamps in this range are a third of that. The Elwick will not be knocked over, which matters beside a sofa, in a walkway or in a house with children. If you have looked at a slim floor lamp and worried about stability, this is the answer to that worry.

Black with smoke, or green

Black with a smoke glass shade is the quiet one — tinted glass over a dark frame, so the lamp reads as a silhouette and the light stays low and warm. Green is the statement: a coloured floor lamp is rare in this catalogue, and on a 1.5 metre frame it becomes a piece of furniture rather than a light fitting. The old specification table said “Base Colour: Black” flatly, which only describes one of the two.

The glass shade shows the globe

Glass rather than fabric, so the globe is visible. That makes the globe part of the design: buy a decorative E27 — a filament or a globe-shaped one — rather than a plain frosted lamp, which will look like an oversight through tinted glass.

Dimming depends on the globe

Fit a dimmable E27 and use a plug-in or inline dimmer and it dims; a plain globe will not. Our record carries no value at all against dimmable; the correct answer is globe dependent.
