Domus THOR-PRO-32 Baffle

The Domus THOR-PRO-32 Baffle is a replaceable internal baffle for the 32 W THOR-PRO head — available in white or black.

⭐⭐ On the brightest head in the family, black is the sensible default

• ⭐ A baffle is a ring inside the aperture that controls what you see when you look into the fitting. ⭐ Black absorbs the stray light a white one reflects back out.
• ⭐⭐ THE 32 W HEAD IS THE BRIGHTEST IN THE RANGE, AND IT IS USUALLY MOUNTED HIGH. ⭐ A high mounting means the aperture is visible from a long way off and from many positions, rather than only from directly beneath. ⭐ A lit white ring at 6 metres is seen across a whole atrium.
• ⭐ SO WHITE IS DIFFICULT TO JUSTIFY HERE ANYWHERE PEOPLE CAN SEE THE FITTING. ⭐ Its place is a warehouse or a plant room where output matters and appearance does not.
• ⭐ THE BAFFLE IS ALSO THE CHEAPEST GLARE STEP, and on this head it should be paired with a honeycomb rather than treated as an alternative to one.

⭐ Why glare control compounds at height

• ⭐ A fitting at 2.7 m is seen by people directly beneath it and briefly. ⭐ A fitting at 6 m is in the upper field of view from most of the room, continuously.
• ⭐⭐ SO THE SAME BRIGHT APERTURE IS SEEN BY MORE PEOPLE FOR LONGER AS THE MOUNTING RISES, WHICH IS WHY HIGH-MOUNTED SCHEMES NEED MORE GLARE CONTROL RATHER THAN LESS. ⚠ The common assumption is the opposite — that height puts the fitting out of the way — and it is wrong.
• ⭐ AND THE NARROW OPTICS THAT SUIT THIS HEAD MAKE IT WORSE. ⭐ A 15° or 24° reflector concentrates the source as well as the beam.
• ⭐ THE FULL SET ON A 32 W HEAD IN AN OCCUPIED SPACE IS: black baffle, careful aim, and a honeycomb. ⭐ Specify all three at the outset; retrofitting them means a lift.

⭐ Do not match the baffle to the body

⭐ The baffle is inside and the body is outside; they do different jobs. ⭐ A white body with a black baffle disappears against a pale ceiling while presenting a dark aperture — ⭐ which is what most high-end specification uses. ⚠ A black body with a white baffle is the worst combination available: a visible fitting with a bright eye. ⭐ On an exposed-services or dark ceiling, black body with black baffle is right — ⚠ but note the head's own black finish may cost output, and on this size that figure is not published.
