Domus SLENDA Round 250mm 8/13W LED Oyster

The Domus SLENDA-RND 250 is a surface-mounted LED oyster — 250 mm, 8 W or 13 W switchable, 3000/4000/5000 K switchable, IP54, double insulated, in white or black.

⭐⭐ The black version is measurably dimmer than the white

• ⭐ The datasheet publishes lumens for each housing colour separately, which almost nothing does. ⭐ At the 8 W setting:

• ⭐ CONSISTENT ACROSS ALL THREE, AVERAGING 2.6%. ⭐ That consistency is what makes it real rather than measurement scatter.
• ⭐ THE CAUSE IS SIMPLE: light inside the fitting bounces before it leaves. ⚠ WE FIRST EXPLAINED THIS AS A WHITE INTERIOR REFLECTING WHAT A BLACK ONE ABSORBS. ⭐ That explanation does not survive the other two sizes: ⭐ the 300 mm measures a mean −0.2% (black marginally brighter at two of three colour temperatures) and the 400 mm −6.7%. ⭐ An optical loss would be consistent; a spread from zero to eight per cent is not. ⭐ The figures below are published by Domus and stand. ⭐ The cause reads as separately-measured products carrying ordinary variation.
• ⭐ IS 2.6% WORTH WORRYING ABOUT? On one fitting, no — ⭐ it is below what the eye detects. ⭐ Across a lighting calculation for a whole floor it is a real if small deficit, and it is the kind of thing that turns a design that just meets a lux target into one that just misses. ⭐ Choose black for how it looks, and allow for it if the numbers are tight.

⭐ 8 W or 13 W, and three colour temperatures — six settings in one fitting

• ⭐ Wattage switchable between 8 and 13 W; colour switchable across three temperatures. ⭐ Output runs from about 900 lm at the low setting to about 1,500 lm at the high one.
• ⭐⭐ THE REASON THIS MATTERS ON A PROJECT IS STOCK, NOT FLEXIBILITY. ⭐ One product covers a hallway that wants 900 lumens and a laundry that wants 1,500, so a builder or sparky carries one box instead of two. ⭐ On a multi-room job that is fewer part numbers, fewer ordering mistakes and fewer leftovers.
• ⚠ THE TRAP IS THE SAME ONE AS ALWAYS: the switch is set at installation and rarely checked. ⭐ Two fittings in one room on different settings is obvious and annoying. ⭐ Set them all before the ceiling goes up, and write the setting somewhere.
• ⛔ The product record lists only 3000 K and 4000 K and only the 13 W setting — ⭐ the sheet has all three colours and both wattages. ⭐ We have published what the sheet says, which is what the fitting does.

⭐ Double insulated, and why that is on the front page of the description

⭐ The fitting is made from polypropylene and polystyrene and is double insulated. ⭐⭐ THE PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCE: IT CAN BE INSTALLED WHERE THERE IS NO EARTH WIRE. ⭐ In older Australian housing that is common — a lighting circuit run before earthing at the fitting was standard. ⭐ A Class I metal fitting cannot legally go there without rewiring the circuit; a double-insulated one can. ⭐ On a renovation that single property can be the difference between replacing a light and replacing a circuit. ⭐ It is also why the body is plastic rather than metal, which is a deliberate engineering choice rather than a cost one.

⭐ IP54 and a 100° beam — a genuinely useful combination

• ⭐ IP54 means protected against dust and splashing, ⭐ which covers bathrooms, laundries, covered outdoor areas and — as Domus notes — coastal dwellings where salt-laden air gets into everything.
• ⭐ The 100° beam is wide, which is what an oyster should be. ⭐ At a 2.4 m ceiling a 100° beam covers roughly a 5.7 m circle at floor level — ⭐ so one 250 mm fitting genuinely lights a small room rather than making a pool in the middle of it.
• ⭐ Uniform distribution from SMD sources rather than a single point also means softer shadows than a downlight gives — ⭐ which in a hallway or a laundry is the more comfortable result.

⭐ A split warranty — five years residential, three commercial

⭐ That distinction is unusual enough to explain. ⭐ A fitting in a house runs a few hours a day; the same fitting in a corridor or a stairwell may run continuously. ⭐ Five years of residential use and three of commercial use are roughly comparable in operating hours, ⭐ so the split is a statement about duty cycle rather than a downgrade. ⭐ If the installation is commercial, the three-year figure is the one that applies regardless of what the residential number says.

An optical loss would be consistent, so the reflectance explanation we first gave does not survive. The published figures stand and are worth designing to size by size. ⭐ DOUBLE INSULATION IS THE OTHER HEADLINE: it installs where there is no earth wire, which in older housing can be the difference between replacing a light and replacing a circuit.
