A suggestion, not a specification. A calculator can get it wrong — have a licensed electrician confirm the driver, the total load and the wiring before you order.
The Domus PLEX-SMD-5 is a 24 V SMD LED strip — 5 W per metre, 70 LEDs per metre, CRI ≥90, IP66, 1 m, at 500 / 525 / 550 lm per metre.
| Strip | LEDs/m | ⭐ One-end run | Dotless? |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLEX-RGBTW | 840 | 5 m | ⭐ ✅ |
| PLEX-COB | 640 | 5 m | ⭐ ✅ |
| PLEX-ULTRA | 560 | ⭐ 13 m | ⭐ ✅ |
| PLEX-SMD-9 | 120 | ⭐ 20 m | ⛔ No |
| ⭐ PLEX-SMD-5 — this one | ⭐ 70 | ⭐ 40 m | ⛔ No |
⭐ 500 lm at 3000 K, 525 at 4000, 550 at 5000 — from 5 W. ⭐ That is 100 to 110 lumens per watt, against the COB strip's 90 to 100 at the same wattage. ⭐ Discrete SMD packages shed heat better than a dense COB array, and cooler LEDs are more efficient LEDs. ⭐ So the long-run strip is also the cheaper one to run — ⭐ the appearance is the only thing you give up.
⭐ IP66 is a different proposition from the IP54 and IP67 elsewhere in the range. ⭐ Domus describes it as “indoor or outdoor weatherproof” — ⭐ the 6 for dust means fully sealed, and the 6 for water means powerful jets, which covers driving rain and hosing. ⚠ What IP66 does not cover is immersion; IP67 does. ⭐ For an external soffit, a fence line or a long garden run, IP66 at 40 metres is the combination that makes this strip unusual.
⭐ The sheet states it in capitals and voids the warranty without it. ⚠ At forty metres that is forty metres of profile, ⭐ and on an outdoor run the profile has to suit the exposure too. ⛔ No description says any of this and none of the catalogue's 47 profiles names this strip. ⭐ Ask us to quote both.

SMD LED strip, IP66, 1 m. 5 W per metre at 24 V DC. 500 lm at 3000 K, 525 at 4000 K, 550 at 5000 K. 70 LEDs per metre. CRI ≥90. 120° beam. 100 mm cutting increment. Continuous run 40 m one-end feed, 80 m two-end. −20 to +50 °C. Aluminium heat sink mandatory. 3-year warranty. ⭐⭐ IT RUNS 40 METRES ON ONE DRIVER FEED WHERE THE COB STRIP AT THE SAME 5 W PER METRE MANAGES 5 — and both draw an identical 0.21 A per metre, so the load cannot be the reason. THE VARIABLE IS THE STRIP'S OWN COPPER: 70 LEDs per metre leaves far more board width for conductor than 640 does, and Domus says so directly ("reduces heat and resistance"). ⭐ THE TRADE NOTHING STATES: dotless appearance and long unbroken runs are opposed. Ask whether anyone will see the strip itself — if not, this is the right product.
Supplied and supported by Lights For You.
Because run length is set by the strip's own copper, not by its load. Both draw 5W per metre at 24V — 0.21A per metre — so the current is identical. But 70 LEDs per metre leaves far more board width for conductor than 640 does, and wider traces mean lower resistance per metre. Domus says it directly: the PLEX-SMD series "reduces heat and resistance, allowing for extra long runs up to 40M".
Definitively not. The PLEX-MICRO strip draws less current per metre than the PLEX-SMD-9 — 0.333A against 0.375 — and runs 5 metres against 20. Higher current, four times the run. Load does not predict run length in this catalogue; the board does.
The dotless appearance. At 70 LEDs per metre this is a line of discrete points, where the COB strips at 640 are continuous. Behind a good diffuser at any real distance it reads as a line, but the dots show at close range or through a clear lens.
Ask whether anyone will see the strip itself. If it is visible — an exposed cove, a shelf edge at eye level, a bar front — dots matter and PLEX-COB is right, at 5 metres per feed. If it is concealed and only the washed surface is seen — a ceiling perimeter, a concealed pelmet, a long external soffit — dots are invisible and this runs 40 metres on one driver.
More efficient, in fact. 500 to 550 lumens from 5 watts is 100 to 110 lumens per watt, against the COB strip's 90 to 100 at the same wattage. Discrete SMD packages shed heat better than a dense COB array, and cooler LEDs are more efficient LEDs. The appearance is the only thing you give up.
Indoor or outdoor weatherproof, in Domus's own framing. The 6 for dust means fully sealed and the 6 for water means powerful jets, which covers driving rain and hosing. What it does not cover is immersion — that is IP67. For an external soffit, a fence line or a long garden run, IP66 at 40 metres is the combination that makes this strip unusual.
The cutting increment is 100mm, the coarsest in the range — so lengths have to round to the nearest ten centimetres. On a long run that is rarely a problem, but on anything that has to meet a joinery dimension it is worth checking first.
