Dome two-way LED deck light

The Dome two-way is a recessed deck and step light that emits in two opposing directions rather than one. Set into a step riser, a deck board or the top of a retaining wall, it lights the surface on both sides of itself — which is what you want along the centre of a path, on a stair nosing between two treads, or on a wall cap where the light needs to reach the ground on either side.

Choosing two-way over one-way is a layout decision rather than a brightness one. A one-way fitting is right at the end of a run or where light must not spill backwards; a two-way fitting halves the number of fittings needed along a continuous edge, because each one does the work of two facing opposite ways.

Light output

The fitting carries two 3W emitters, so it draws 6W in total. Havit rates each head at 180lm, 185lm and 190lm across the three colour settings, which gives the fitting a total output of 360lm, 370lm and 380lm at 3000K, 4000K and 5500K respectively. It is tri-colour, so the colour temperature is selected on the fitting at installation rather than fixed at manufacture.

Colour rendering is above 80 CRI and the beam is 120° from each face. Rated lamp expectancy is >30,000 hrs, and the LED is built in — no globe to buy and none to replace, which matters for a fitting recessed into a walking surface.

Power — 12V, and the driver is separate

The Dome runs on 12V DC and is a Class 3 low-voltage fitting, so no earth is required at the fitting. It does need a 12V DC driver on the circuit, and that driver is not supplied with the light. Low voltage in the walking surface is the reason this type of fitting can be recessed into a deck at all.

If you are extending a run that already exists, check the capacity left on the installed driver before ordering — a two-way fitting draws twice what the one-way version does, so a run that was sized for one-way fittings will not take the same number of these.

Installation and the cutout

The Dome needs a Ø26mm cutout, and Havit's installation detail matters as much as the hole: allow a 100mm space below the fitting, bed it over 100mm to 150mm of crushed rock for drainage, and set the surrounding ground to fall away slightly so water runs off rather than sitting under the fitting.

Drill a test hole in an offcut first and set out the whole run before cutting any of it. A recessed fitting cannot be moved along afterwards, and on a two-way light the orientation matters too — the two faces need to point along the path rather than across it. It is sold in silver and black.
