Ardam is a compact 114 × 75 mm surface-mounted step light offered in three finishes that are not simply colours: black powder-coated aluminium, antique brass and solid brass. The real decision is material, because it drives both the price and how the fitting survives its position — solid brass and antique brass suit salt air and heavy handling, while black aluminium is the cost-effective choice for a sheltered inland run.

The choice to make: aluminium or solid brass

Black Ardam is powder-coated aluminium: light, inexpensive and fine on a garden wall away from the coast, though the coating is what protects it and a scratch is a weak point. The brass versions cost roughly twice as much and behave differently — the metal itself is the corrosion resistance, so a scratch weathers rather than fails. Within a few hundred metres of surf, that difference decides the specification.

• Front-path and garden steps on a low-voltage circuit, one fitting per flight or landing.
• Coastal properties — specify the solid brass or antique brass version where salt spray reaches the wall.
• Apartment and townhouse common stairs where the IK10 impact rating matters at shin height.

Specifying it

Rated IP65 for direct rain and hose washing, with frosted glass over a 3 W LED and a 120° beam. Tri-colour selectable at install across 3000K, 4000K and 5500K, with output in the 180–190 lm range depending on the temperature selected. Choose one temperature for the whole run — mixed temperatures on a single flight of steps is the most common way a good install looks wrong after dark.

Ardam is 12 V DC and requires a 12 V DC LED driver. It must never be connected directly to 240 V: doing so destroys it and voids the warranty. Each fitting must sit within 25 m of its driver, and the driver should be sized for the combined wattage of the whole circuit. The LED is built in, so no globe is needed or possible.
