Alcona Floor Lamp

The Alcona is a 1,400 mm floor lamp wrapped in vertically ribbed textured fabric — two E27 globes at 25 W each — in beige, black or green.

The whole lamp is the shade

There is no visible frame and no stem doing structural work in view. The Alcona is a column of ribbed fabric standing 1.4 metres tall, and it lights through its entire surface rather than out of an opening. Switched on, the object itself glows — which is why it reads as sculpture in a corner rather than as a lamp beside a chair.

Vertical ribbing, which does real work

The ribs vary the fabric’s thickness all the way round, so light passes through unevenly — brighter in the valleys, softer on the ridges. Over 1.4 metres that produces a fine vertical striping that a smooth column never has. It is the same principle as a pleated shade, at ten times the scale.

Two globes, because one would not fill it

Two E27 holders, 25 W each, 50 W total. A column this tall lit by a single globe would be bright at one point and dark elsewhere; two sources spread the glow up the whole body. Buy both from one batch — a colour mismatch in a fabric column shows as a band.

Substantial, and it needs to be

6.3 kg with a 200 mm base under a 350 mm body. A 1.4-metre fabric column with a light base would be a hazard; this one has the weight to stay put.

Beige, black or green

Beige passes the most light and glows warmest. Green is the unexpected one — a fabric floor lamp in colour, which almost nothing else here offers. Black contains the light, so it exits mainly top and bottom and the column reads as a dark form.

Double insulated

Class II — no earth required, with a 2,000 mm cable. ⚠ The old page said it must be installed by a licensed electrician; that is boilerplate from a hard-wired fitting. Ask us to confirm the plug arrangement before you order if that matters to you.
