What it does

This is the mounting base for the fitting it is listed against - the plate that fixes to the surface and that the fitting then stands on.

It does two jobs. It spreads the load of a fitting standing on a small footprint, and it gives the cable a protected route up into the body rather than leaving it emerging from the surface beside it.

A surface base is what makes a fitting installable where digging in is not an option - on a deck, a paved terrace, a concrete slab, or anywhere the substrate cannot be disturbed. That is often the difference between a lighting position being possible and not.

Fix it into something solid and get it level before the fitting goes on. A base that is slightly out shows in the fitting above it, magnified by its height, and correcting it afterwards means undoing the cable entry as well.

This is the surface-mounted version. Choose the shape to match the other ceiling penetrations in the room rather than the fitting alone - a round canopy beside square vents reads as an afterthought, and the reverse is just as true.
