A downlight is set into the ceiling so the fitting itself all but disappears and only the light it casts is visible. It is the default for general lighting in most commercial interiors precisely because it takes up no visual space.

Because it is recessed, the decisions that matter are made before it is installed. The cut-out size has to be allowed for, the ceiling void has to be deep enough, and the spacing has to be set out on a plan rather than judged in the room - a downlight cannot be moved a hundred millimetres once the ceiling is closed.

Spacing is what separates a well-lit space from a patchy one. Too far apart and the floor shows scallops of light and shade; too close and the ceiling reads as a grid of bright holes and the installation costs more than it needed to.

Light output and colour

It draws 13W.

The colour temperature is 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, 5000K, 5700K.

Colour rendering is 90+ CRI, which describes how faithfully colours appear under the light. It matters most where the light falls on planting, timber, brick or stone, all of which look flat under a poor-rendering source.

The beam spread is 60°.

Where it can be installed

This fitting is rated IP44. Check that against where it is going before ordering.

It is made from aluminium + pc.

Powering and installing it

This is a 240V fitting, wired directly to mains.

Mains connection is licensed electrical work in Australia and has to be done by an electrician.

Plan the cable route before anything is fixed. It is the part of an installation that cannot be changed afterwards without undoing the rest of it, and it is the reason otherwise finished jobs get left half done.

Before you order

Two checks save most of the problems that show up after an installation is finished. The first is where the fitting will actually be seen from: a light chosen for how it looks in a product photograph is being judged from a viewpoint nobody will ever stand in, and the same fitting can be discreet from the house and glaring from the street.

The second is what else is going in around it. A single fitting is rarely the whole scheme, and matching colour temperature and finish across everything in a space matters more to the result than the specification of any one item in it. Mixed colour temperatures in particular read as a fault rather than as a choice.
