This is a standard aluminium profile - the channel that LED strip sits in, sized for the strip widths most jobs use. It is the general-purpose choice: under a cabinet, along a cove, up a stair or behind a mirror.
The most important reason to use one is heat. LEDs do not fail from being switched on and off, they fail from running hot - and strip stuck directly to plasterboard or timber has nowhere to send that heat. Aluminium draws it away along the length of the extrusion, which keeps the LEDs cooler and holds their output steadier.
The second reason is how it looks. Without a diffuser you see the individual LEDs as a row of bright points, and every one of them reflects in a benchtop or a splashback. A diffuser turns the same run into a continuous line.
The third is protection. In a channel the strip is shielded from knocks, from dust settling on it, and from being pulled at during cleaning.
This channel takes LED strip up to 11mm (w) x 3mm (h). ⚠ Check your strip against that before ordering - strip that is too wide will not seat, and the profile is the part that has to accommodate the strip rather than the other way round.
Profiles are cut to length on site with a mitre saw and a fine-tooth blade. Plan where the joins fall before cutting: a join is much less visible in a corner or at a natural break than partway along an otherwise continuous run.
Leave yourself a way to get power in. The cable has to enter somewhere, and a run that has been fixed, diffused and capped with no thought given to where the driver sits is a run that has to come apart again.
Diffusers and end caps to suit are listed separately, so the finish can be chosen to match the room rather than being fixed by the channel.
Strip will run without one, but it will run hotter and show every individual LED. A profile draws heat away and, with a diffuser, turns the run into a continuous line.
No. The profile is the channel only. The LED strip and the driver that powers it are separate.
Up to 11mm (w) x 3mm (h). Check your strip against that before ordering.
Yes. Profiles are cut on site with a mitre saw and a fine-tooth blade. Plan where the joins fall before cutting.
They are listed separately, which lets the finish be chosen to suit the room. Check what your run needs before ordering.
No. At IP20 it is for indoor, dry locations only.
