Rye Exterior Wall Light Small or Large

The Rye is a traditional coach-style exterior wall light in a bevelled-glass lantern, made in two sizes and two finishes. It is the fitting you put either side of a front door or along a boundary wall when the house wants something period rather than minimal.

Read the IP rating before you choose where it goes

The Rye is published at IP43. That covers spray falling at up to 60° from vertical — rain blown at a moderate angle — and it does not cover direct hosing or a fully exposed position on a wall that takes weather square-on. Under an eave, a porch or a covered entry it is entirely at home. On an unprotected wall facing the prevailing weather, specify something rated IP54 or better instead.

Two sizes, and the difference is more than height

The small is 200 mm wide and 400 mm tall; the large is 275 mm wide and 500 mm tall. A pair of smalls flanking a standard doorway reads correct; a single large suits a wider entry or a pier where one fitting has to hold the wall on its own. Buy the pair in the same size — mismatched lantern heights either side of a door is the kind of thing you cannot stop seeing afterwards.

Antique brass or black

Antique brass is the warmer, more traditional read and it will continue to age outdoors. Black is the quieter choice against render or brick and hides coastal grime better between cleans.

Where it works

• Covered entries and porches, in pairs either side of the door.
• Under eaves along a driveway elevation, where the run is sheltered.
• Garden walls and piers that sit under planting or an overhang.
• Period and heritage frontages where a modern rectangular fitting would look wrong.

Specifying it

Each takes a single E27 globe up to 25 W, and no globe is supplied. A warm filament-style lamp suits the bevelled glass; a cold white one fights it. Rated IP43, so shelter it as described above. Warranty on the Rye is one year, not the three years most of the Telbix range carries — worth knowing if you are comparing it against a neighbouring exterior fitting.
