Frya Floor Lamp in Natural Rattan

The Frya is an 1,800 mm floor lamp with a hand-woven rattan shade in a wide bell form, on a white iron base.

1.8 metres — this is a tall lamp

Worth registering before anything else. Most floor lamps here stand 1.4 to 1.6 metres; the Frya is 1,800 mm. That puts the shade above head height, so the woven pattern is thrown down and outward across the room rather than onto the wall beside it. It is a different effect from a shorter lamp and it needs the ceiling height to carry it.

Hand-woven, and the shadows are the product

Light escapes between every strand, so the lamp throws a pattern of textured shadow across whatever is around it. A moulded or printed shade cannot do that, and no two woven shades cast quite the same pattern.

A wide bell, not a teardrop

The Frya’s shade flares outward and downward — unlike the Rana’s teardrop, which draws in at the top. A bell at 1.8 metres casts the pattern wide and low, over a seating area rather than up a wall. Choose the Frya to light a space and the Rana to decorate a surface.

Plug in and use it — but it needs assembling

Class II, double insulated, no earth required, with a lead and plug and a 2,000 mm cable. Its own datasheet says installation required: no. Assembly is required and instructions are in the box.

Caring for rattan

Telbix’s instruction, which never reached the old page: wipe clean with a dry cloth, and do not use strong liquid cleaners. Natural fibre and wet chemicals do not mix — it is the one thing that will ruin the shade.

One E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied

A clear globe gives the sharpest shadow pattern through the weave; a frosted one softens it. At 1.8 metres the globe is above eye level, so a clear one will not glare — which is exactly when to use it.
