Mood Stainless Steel LED Step by Havit Lighting - HV3282T-SS316

The Mood is the brightest step light in this range and the most corrosion-resistant, and those two things are why it costs what it does. The body is 316 marine-grade stainless steel — the molybdenum-bearing grade specified for coastal and poolside work, not the cheaper 304 that tea-stains within a season or two of salt air.

316 stainless is about salt, IP54 is about water

These two properties get conflated, and on this fitting they point different ways. The 316 body means salt-laden air will not pit or stain it, so it belongs on a beachfront stair where a powder-coated aluminium fitting would fail cosmetically first and structurally later. Its rating, though, is IP54 — protection against dust and against splashing water from any direction. That covers rain and run-off; it does not cover a jet. So the Mood suits an exposed coastal wall, but if the step in question is hosed down as part of pool cleaning, specify an IP65 fitting instead. Choosing this one for its marine grade and then pressure-washing it is the mistake to avoid.

Brightness, and why 6W is a lot here

At 460 lm, 490 lm and 520 lm across its three colour-temperature settings, the Mood puts out roughly three times what a typical polycarbonate step light manages. That makes it useful where a step light is doing double duty — lighting a wide flight and also giving a terrace or path enough ambient light to be usable — but it also means mounting height matters. Set high on a wall it becomes a small wall light; set low it can glare if someone is looking along the run rather than down at it.

Wiring it

It runs on 12 V DC and needs a 12 V DC LED driver sized for the total load with headroom above it. The datasheet lists Protection Class 3 — no earth required at the fitting, and warns in capitals against connecting it directly to 240 V. Because it draws 6 W, a run of six needs 36 W of driver, and on a long coastal wall it is worth feeding from near the middle of the run so the far fitting does not dim from voltage drop. Give the driver a position that suits its own rating — a cavity or weatherproof enclosure, not buried and not exposed.

Specifying it

The 6 W LED is built in — no globe, no socket, nothing to replace. Tri-colour switching across 3000 K, 4000 K and 5500 K is set once at installation; on a stainless fitting the cooler settings suit the metal and the warmer ones soften it against paving. It is not dimmable, so if the brightness needs taming, do it with mounting position rather than a dimmer.

Supplied by Lights For You. On a coastal installation, rinse the fitting with fresh water occasionally rather than never — 316 resists salt, but standing salt deposits will still dull the finish over years.
