Fino Square LED Outdoor Step Light

The Fino Square is the larger of the two square Fino step lights, and the one to specify when the fitting has to do actual work rather than only mark an edge. Its opal polycarbonate diffuser spreads a 6 W output across a wide face, so it reads as an even glowing square instead of a visible LED — the difference between a fitting you notice at ankle height and one you look straight past.

It needs a constant-voltage 12V driver

Both order codes are 12 V DC, and the installation sheet is specific about the kind: 12v DC Constant Voltage. That matters when you are buying the driver, because a constant-current driver is a different device and will not run this fitting properly. The sheet also warns in capitals against connecting the fitting directly to 240 V — that destroys it immediately and is not a warranty claim. Wiring is parallel, and the fitting is Protection Class 3, no earth required, which is what keeps a long run along a wall or a stair simple to wire.

Where it works

• External stair flights, mounted on the riser so the tread below is lit rather than the wall above.
• Wide treads and low retaining walls, where a square face suits brick or block coursing.
• Covered entries, porches and under eaves — IP54 covers rain and splashing.
• Runs of several fittings from one constant-voltage 12 V driver.

What IP54 and IK08 each tell you

Two ratings, two different risks, and both are on the sheet. IP54 is water and dust: protection against dust in harmful quantity and against splashing from any direction. It covers rain and run-off but not a jet, so if the step gets hosed as part of cleaning a pool surround, choose an IP65 fitting instead. IK08 is impact — a rating most step lights do not publish at all, and worth having on a fitting mounted at shin height where a wheelbarrow or a boot will eventually find it.

Specifying it

The 6 W LED is built in — no globe, no socket, nothing to replace over a rated life of over 30,000 hours. Tri-colour switching is set once at installation across 3000 K, 4000 K and 5500 K, giving 195 lm, 199 lm and 198 lm on a 120° beam. Note those three are effectively the same brightness — the 4000 K setting is marginally the highest, so choose the colour you want and ignore the output difference. It is not dimmable. CRI is above 80, aluminium poly powder coated in black or white at the same price.

Lights For You stocks both finishes. If you are running these on a flight, set every fitting to the same colour temperature before it goes on the wall — the switch is on the fitting, not somewhere you can reach afterwards.
