The Ardam is a surface-mounted step light offered in three finishes that are not the same fitting underneath, and that is worth knowing before you choose. The antique brass and brass versions are solid brass; the black is aluminium, poly powder coated. The price reflects it — the black is roughly half the cost of either brass finish — so the decision is a material decision, not a colour one.

Choosing between them

Solid brass is the choice where the fitting will be touched, knocked, or seen close up, and near the coast, where it will outlast a coated finish that eventually chips and lets water behind it. Brass also weathers: the natural brass darkens on its own schedule, while the antique finish arrives already darkened and stays close to that tone. Powder-coated aluminium is the sensible choice inland, at a lower cost, and for a run where the fittings are seen as a line of light rather than individually.

Wiring it

All three run on 12 V DC constant voltage, so the driver must be a constant-voltage type — a constant-current driver is a different device and will not run them properly. Wiring is parallel, and the fitting is Protection Class 3, no earth required. At 6 W each, six fittings draw 36 W; size the driver above that rather than level with it, and place it somewhere suited to its own IP rating instead of burying it.

It dims, and the driver has to as well

The Ardam is dimmable, which is uncommon at this size. Because it runs at 12 V DC the dimming is done upstream at the driver, so the driver itself must be a dimmable 12 V DC constant-voltage unit, matched to a compatible wall dimmer. Specify the two together — a dimmable fitting on an ordinary driver produces no dimming at best and flicker at worst, and the fitting gets blamed.

Specifying it

The 6 W LED is built in — no globe, no socket. Tri-colour switching across 3000 K, 4000 K and 5500 K gives 360 lm, 380 lm and 370 lm on a 120° beam; the middle setting is the brightest, so read the three as colours rather than a ladder. IP65 covers direct rain and hose wash-down. Frosted glass diffuser, CRI above 80.

Lights For You stocks all three Ardam finishes. If a project mixes brass and black on one property, keep each run to a single finish — the brass will move in tone over time and the black will not.

Questions
Are the three finishes the same fitting?

No. Antique brass and brass are solid brass; the black is powder-coated aluminium. That is why the black costs roughly half as much.

Which should I choose near the coast?

One of the solid brass finishes. A coated aluminium fitting eventually chips and lets water behind the coating; solid brass does not have that failure mode.

Will the brass change colour?

The natural brass darkens over time on its own schedule. The antique finish arrives already darkened and holds close to that tone.

What driver does it need?

A 12 V DC constant-voltage driver, and a dimmable one if you want the dimming. A constant-current driver will not run it correctly.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes. The dimming happens at the driver rather than the fitting, so the driver must be a dimmable 12 V DC constant-voltage unit on a compatible dimmer.

Does it need an earth?

No. Protection Class 3 — low voltage, no earth required at the fitting. Wiring is parallel.

What is the warranty?

Three years, as a replacement warranty.

Warranties

For all warranty claims please ensure you have your proof of purchase at hand, an invoice from your electrician from the installation and check the faulty product is within the applicable warranty period. Warranty is replacement only.

Lights For You is not responsible for damages caused by unprofessional installation, modified products or manipulated by the customer or by any other person not authorised by the manufacturer; as well as by improper use, manipulation and/or short circuits, apparent signs of improper treatment.

Faulty items: lodge warranty directly with the brand (manufacturer). Keep proof of purchase.

Damaged or Missing Items

Notification of any damages or missing items must be received by Lights For You within seven (7) days of receipt of the product. Please email photos to ashfield@lightsforyou.com.au.

If the product is to be repaired or replaced, it must correspond to the one originally sent by Lights For You and the customer must include the delivery note and/or invoice.

Returns

Change of Mind Returns

  • Customers who wish to return a product due to a change of mind or cancelled order may do so within thirty (30) days of receipt.
  • The customer is responsible for the shipping costs for a change of mind return, irrespective of any free, discounted or any other type of shipping promotion that may have been applicable at the time of your order. This includes any costs you incur for us shipping the product to you in the first place and the cost of shipping the product back to us.

Cancellations

Customers who wish to cancel all or part of an order due to change of mind or incorrectly ordered may do subject to cancelling in within 12 hours, during business hours from time of purchase. Once products have been shipped, you cannot cancel them.
