Niso solves a specific problem: metal near the sea. Havit's own installation guidance for its aluminium fittings is blunt about it — they are not to go within a couple of kilometres of salt water — and stainless steel fittings near the coast need regular cleaning or they tea-stain. Niso's body is polycarbonate, so there is no metal in the housing to corrode, pit or stain, and Havit lists it plainly as suitable for coastal installation. At its price it is also the cheapest way into a proper MR16 garden spike, coast or no coast.
You give up the look. A polycarbonate body does not develop the patina of brass or copper and it will never be the fitting anyone admires. You do not give up the light: it takes the same 5 W MR16 tri-colour globe as the metal-bodied spikes and produces the same 270 lm, 285 lm and 300 lm at 3000K, 4000K and 5500K. Sealing is IP65, impact rating IK08, and the diffuser is clear polycarbonate to match the body. In salt air the plastic body will outlast a coated metal one, which is the trade the fitting exists to make.
Niso takes a standard MR16 globe, supplied. That is a real advantage — when it eventually dims, you change a globe rather than the fitting. It also means the fitting has no beam angle of its own: the beam is whatever globe you fit. The tri-colour MR16 supplied with it is a 120° spread, which is a wide wash rather than a spot, so if you are uplighting a trunk you will want a narrower MR16 in its place. Check the beam figure on any replacement, and stay under the 20 W ceiling the socket is rated for — that limit exists for halogen and no LED goes near it.
Protection class 3, CRI above 80, lamp life rated under 30,000 hours, and a 3-year replacement warranty. Low-voltage garden wiring is still work for a licensed electrician.
If your garden is anywhere near salt spray, ask Lights For You before you buy a metal spike light — this is the one case where the cheaper fitting is also the longer-lasting one.
For corrosion, yes. Havit's guidance keeps aluminium fittings well away from salt water, and stainless steel needs regular cleaning near the coast or it tea-stains — which the warranty does not cover. Polycarbonate has nothing in it to corrode. It looks less impressive and that is the whole trade.
Whatever globe is in it. The fitting takes a replaceable MR16, so the beam belongs to the globe rather than the housing. The tri-colour MR16 supplied with it is a 120° wash. Fit a narrower MR16 if you want a spot, and check the beam figure printed on the globe before you buy.
Up to the socket's 20 W ceiling. In practice that limit is there for halogen and no LED MR16 comes close to it, so you can choose freely among LED globes. What actually changes the result is the beam angle, not the wattage.
Yes — a suitable 12 V DC LED driver, and it must not be connected directly to 240 V. For dimming, the driver must be a 12 V DC Triac-dimmable model; the dimming happens at the driver, not inside the fitting.
Because it is an adjustable head with a wide 120° globe sitting close to the ground, so there are aiming positions from which you look straight into it. Aim it at the planting or the wall rather than along a path, and keep it out of the direct sightline from a window or seat.
The body and diffuser are both polycarbonate, rated IK08 for impact and IP65 for water, with lamp life quoted under 30,000 hours. Treat it as you would any exterior plastic component: it will handle sun and rain, but it is not the fitting to choose if appearance over ten years is the priority.
Same globe, same output, same 12 V DC supply — different body. The metal fittings are the ones to buy where they will be seen and where a patina is wanted. Niso is the one to buy where salt, budget or fitting count decides, and it is the only body in the range that ignores salt entirely.
