What it does

A canopy is the plate that covers the ceiling opening a suspended fitting hangs from. It hides the wiring connection and the rough edge of the hole, and it gives the pendant or profile something finished to hang from rather than a gap in the plasterboard.

It is a small part that does a disproportionate amount of the visual work. A suspended fitting is looked at from below and from across a room, and the canopy is what the eye follows the drop up to. A neat one makes the installation read as designed; a mismatched or missing one undoes the fitting beneath it.

Recessed canopies sit up into the ceiling so only a flush ring shows, which suits a ceiling where nothing should project. Surface canopies sit against the ceiling and are the practical choice where there is no depth above it to work with - a concrete slab, or a ceiling with services already crowding the void.

Choosing and ordering

This is the rectangle, surface-mounted version. Choose the shape to match the other ceiling penetrations in the room rather than the fitting alone - a round canopy beside square vents reads as an afterthought, and the reverse is just as true.

Identifying the part you need

It is usually printed on the body, on the driver, or on a label inside the housing, and it is worth finding before ordering rather than after.
