What an up/down wall light does — and how to get it right

Two beams from one point, one up the wall and one down. Done well it is the most effective exterior wall light there is; done badly it is two bright dots.

  • Mount it close to the wall. The effect comes from light grazing the surface — the closer it sits, the more texture appears in brick, stone or render. Standing it off flattens the whole thing.
  • Height matters. Around 1.8–2 m puts the downward cone at head height where it is useful, and leaves the upward cone room to develop.
  • Use them in a rhythm — a row at even spacing along a façade is what makes this fitting look designed.
  • ⚠ Check what is above. An eave, gutter or balcony directly overhead cuts the up-cone off and wastes half the fitting.
✅ Bronze and brass — and why these two are different from a colour choice

The other five SHADOW finishes are powder-coated or stainless. Bronze and brass are warm metals, and outdoors they behave differently:

  • They suit aged, traditional and heritage façades in a way black and titanium do not — against sandstone, red brick or rendered heritage work they read as part of the building.
  • ⚠ Warm metals weather. Depending on the finish applied, they can darken and patinate over years. Some people buy them for exactly that; others expect them to stay bright. Ask us what finish is applied to these two before you commit — it is not recorded, and it is the difference between a feature and a disappointment.
The GU10 lamps — not supplied, and they set the whole effect
  • Beam angle is the design decision. Narrow (25–36°) gives two tight, dramatic cones with sharp edges. Wide (60°+) gives soft overlapping pools that light the wall evenly.
  • ⚠ Use the same lamp in both heads, and the same across every fitting on a façade. Mixed beam angles on one wall are instantly visible.
  • Warm 2700–3000 K on brick, stone and warm render — and especially with bronze or brass, where a cool lamp fights the metal.
  • ⚠ Outdoor-rated GU10s.

Warranties

For all warranty claims please ensure you have your proof of purchase at hand, an invoice from your electrician from the installation and check the faulty product is within the applicable warranty period. Warranty is replacement only.

Lights For You is not responsible for damages caused by unprofessional installation, modified products or manipulated by the customer or by any other person not authorised by the manufacturer; as well as by improper use, manipulation and/or short circuits, apparent signs of improper treatment.

Faulty items: lodge warranty directly with the brand (manufacturer). Keep proof of purchase.

Damaged or Missing Items

Notification of any damages or missing items must be received by Lights For You within seven (7) days of receipt of the product. Please email photos to ashfield@lightsforyou.com.au.

If the product is to be repaired or replaced, it must correspond to the one originally sent by Lights For You and the customer must include the delivery note and/or invoice.

Returns

Change of Mind Returns

  • Customers who wish to return a product due to a change of mind or cancelled order may do so within thirty (30) days of receipt.
  • The customer is responsible for the shipping costs for a change of mind return, irrespective of any free, discounted or any other type of shipping promotion that may have been applicable at the time of your order. This includes any costs you incur for us shipping the product to you in the first place and the cost of shipping the product back to us.

Cancellations

Customers who wish to cancel all or part of an order due to change of mind or incorrectly ordered may do subject to cancelling in within 12 hours, during business hours from time of purchase. Once products have been shipped, you cannot cancel them.
