TURIN LARGE CHAIN PENDANT B22

The Domus TURIN LARGE chain pendant is a hung exterior lantern — 800 mm overall, 310 mm wide, B22, 240 V, IP43, in five colours.

⚠ 800 mm overall — measure the soffit before anything else

• ⭐ This is the tallest hung lantern in either TURIN range: 800 mm against the standard chain pendant's 670.
• ⭐⭐ THAT 130 mm DECIDES WHETHER IT FITS.
  • ⭐ From a 2.7 m soffit the lantern bottom sits near 1.9 m — clear.
  • ⚠ From a 2.4 m soffit it sits near 1.6 m — head height for most adults.
• ⭐ MEASURE THE SOFFIT, NOT THE CEILING INSIDE. ⚠ Porch and verandah soffits are routinely lower than the internal ceiling, and they are rarely what people picture when choosing a pendant.
• ⭐ IF THE HEIGHT IS TIGHT, the standard TURIN chain pendant is 130 mm shorter, or the LARGE wall bracket puts the same lantern beside the door instead of above it.

⭐ The one LARGE arrangement that needs a ceiling

• ⭐ Every other TURIN LARGE arrangement attaches to something vertical — a wall, a pier, a post. ⭐ This one hangs from something horizontal.
• ⭐⭐ SO IT IS THE ANSWER FOR COVERED OUTDOOR SPACES: a porch, a portico, a verandah, a covered entry — positions where a wall bracket has no wall in the right place and a post has no ground.
• ⭐ IT ALSO PUTS LIGHT WHERE PEOPLE STAND — ⭐ directly above a doorway rather than beside it, lighting the threshold, the lock and whoever is at the door evenly rather than from one side.
• ⭐ AT 310 mm WIDE IT IS SUBSTANTIAL, so it wants a portico or a deep porch rather than a narrow entry — ⭐ the standard pendant at a smaller width is the one for a tight space.

⭐ IP43 works here only because of the roof

• ⭐ IP43 covers spraying water to 60° from vertical. ⛔ Not driving rain.
• ⭐⭐ ON A PENDANT THAT IS THE BINDING CONSTRAINT, because a hanging lantern has no wall or body sheltering it from above — rain falls straight onto the top of it. ⭐ The brackets and posts in this family have geometry protecting them; a pendant does not.
• ⭐ UNDER A SOFFIT, THE ROOF DOES THE WORK THE IP RATING DOES NOT. ⛔ Do not hang it in an open position on the strength of the family being “exterior”.
• ⭐ THE 4 IN IP43 EXCLUDES WIRES AND MOST INSECTS, ⭐ which on a lantern people stand under and look up into matters more than usual — a lantern full of insects is visible from directly below in a way it is not on a post.

⚠ Chain rather than rod — and covered does not mean sheltered

⭐ A chain suspension swings; a rigid rod does not. ⭐⭐ COVERED DOES NOT MEAN SHELTERED FROM WIND, and a verandah on an exposed site moves air freely. ⭐ On a deep porch or an enclosed portico that is a non-issue; ⚠ on an open carport or an exposed verandah corner a swinging lantern is distracting, and over years the movement works at the fixing. ⭐ Chain does have a real advantage: links can be removed to set the drop exactly, which a fixed rod cannot do — and given the 800 mm overall height, that adjustment is worth having.

⭐ B22, no lamp, and opal is close to essential

⭐ The lamp is not included. ⭐⭐ A PENDANT IS THE ONE ARRANGEMENT WHERE PEOPLE LOOK UP INTO THE LANTERN, because it is above them — and a clear or filament lamp sits directly in the eye-line of anyone waiting for the door to open. ⭐ An opal B22 is close to essential here rather than merely preferable. ⭐ On an 800 mm lantern the diffuser volume is substantial, so a globe-shaped lamp sized to fill it works better than a compact one sitting low. ⭐ Warm rather than cool: at an entrance, cool white reads as institutional.

⚠ "Large" is a parallel range

⭐ Bracket reference GT-481, against the standard range's GT-421, and the LARGE offers only one post height. ⭐⭐ DECIDE THE LARGEST ARRANGEMENT THE PROPERTY NEEDS FIRST, THEN PICK THE FAMILY. ⚠ Do not mix the two sizes: a Large lantern beside a standard one reads as a mistake rather than a hierarchy, and on a pendant the difference is particularly visible because it hangs at eye level.
