⭐⭐ Two lanterns, one hole in the ground

• ⭐ A twin-head post carries two lanterns on a single column and base.
• ⭐⭐ THE SAVING IS NOT THE FITTING, IT IS THE GROUNDWORK. ⭐ Every post means a footing dug and poured, a conduit run and a cable pulled — and on a driveway that often means cutting and reinstating paving. ⭐ Two heads on one post halves all of that.
• ⭐ IT ALSO HALVES THE OBSTRUCTIONS. ⭐ On a narrow verge or between a driveway and a boundary, one post is often possible where two are not.
• ⚠ THE COUNTER-ARGUMENT IS SPACING. ⭐ Two heads on one post are about 650 mm apart; two separate posts can be metres apart. ⭐ If the aim is to light a long run evenly, separate posts spaced along it do that and a twin-head post does not.
• ⭐ SO THE TWIN SUITS A FOCAL POSITION — ⭐ a driveway entrance, a gateway, either side of a front path — where you want more light at one point rather than light spread along a line.

⭐ 2.11 m, and why the twin sits between the single heights

⭐ The twin-head TURIN comes at 1.49 m, 2.11 m and 2.47 m; the single at 1.32, 1.96 and 2.37. ⭐⭐ THE TWIN HEIGHTS ARE CONSISTENTLY TALLER, BECAUSE THE HEADS SIT ON ARMS RATHER THAN DIRECTLY ON THE COLUMN. ⭐ At 2,090 mm this one puts the lanterns at roughly the same height as a 1.96 m single — so the light lands similarly, from two sources instead of one. ⭐ If you are mixing singles and twins on a property, match them by lantern height rather than by post height.

⚠ A 650 mm footprint is a real object

• ⭐ The base is 650 mm square against 290 on the single-head 1.96 m post — ⭐ because two arms need a wider stance to stay stable.
• ⚠ THAT IS MORE THAN TWICE THE FOOTPRINT, AND IT IS THE FIGURE MOST OFTEN OVERLOOKED. ⭐ In a 600 mm garden bed a twin-head post does not fit; against a fence line it may overhang.
• ⭐ CHECK THE BED WIDTH AND ANY SETBACK REQUIREMENT BEFORE ORDERING, ⭐ and remember the footing has to be wider still.
• ⭐ It also weighs more and catches more wind — ⭐ two lanterns on arms is a larger sail area than one on a column, so the footing matters more than on a single.

⭐ Two lamps, and they should match

⭐ Two B22 lamps are needed and neither is included. ⭐⭐ ON A TWIN-HEAD POST MATCHING THEM IS NOT OPTIONAL: the two lanterns are 650 mm apart and seen together, so any difference in colour temperature or brightness is unmissable. ⭐ Buy them as a pair, from the same batch, and replace them as a pair too — a single replacement three years in will not match its neighbour. ⭐ Opal rather than clear, and warm rather than cool, for the same reasons as the single-head version.

⭐ IP43, and the maintenance that follows

⭐ IP43 covers spraying water to 60° from vertical — not driving rain, hosing or sprinklers. ⭐ On a post the head shelters its own opening, so the practical exposure is wind-driven rain. ⭐⭐ WITH TWO LANTERNS THERE ARE TWICE AS MANY SEALS AND TWICE AS MANY LAMPHOLDERS TO FAIL — ⭐ not a reason against it, but a reason to check both when maintaining rather than only the one that has stopped working. ⭐ Check the irrigation layout before setting the post.

⭐ Die-cast aluminium, and the base is what wears

⭐ Die-cast aluminium with moulded acrylic lenses, cast in Italy and powder-coated in Australia. ⭐ The coating is what protects the aluminium, and the vulnerable zone is the bottom 300 mm where mowers and whipper-snippers reach. ⭐⭐ ON A WIDER-BASED TWIN POST THERE IS MORE OF THAT ZONE EXPOSED, ⭐ so keep mulch and soil off it and touch up chips as they appear.
