⭐ Surface mounting, and when it is the right body

• ⭐ Concrete soffits, fire-rated ceilings, ceilings full of services, and shallow voids. ⭐ The recessed version's housing is 170 mm deep and needs somewhere to go; this needs nothing above the ceiling.
• ⭐⭐ ON A FIRE-RATED CEILING IT IS A COMPLIANCE SIMPLIFICATION — ⭐ cutting a penetration breaches the rating unless it is made good to the same standard.
• ⭐ IT IS ALSO THE RETROFIT ANSWER IN AN OCCUPIED SPACE. ⭐ No hole, no dust, no plaster patching, no access needed above the ceiling — ⭐ which in a shop that cannot close, or an office being re-lit over a weekend, is often what decides it.
• ⚠ The cost is that it is seen. ⭐ A 62 mm cylinder projecting 170 mm is an object on the ceiling, where a recessed fitting is an aperture.

⭐ 15 W is the size most retail actually needs

• ⭐ 1,200 to 1,300 lumens. ⭐ From a 3 m ceiling in a 36° beam that is a bright, clearly defined pool on a shelf or table without the harshness a larger fitting brings at close range.
• ⭐ THE COMMON MISTAKE IS OVER-SPECIFYING. ⭐ A 32 W head from a 2.7 m ceiling onto a counter is uncomfortable to stand under and washes out the contrast that makes a display read. ⭐ Step up for height or area, not for impact.
• ⭐ The black version loses only about 1.4% here, ⭐ so choose the finish on appearance — ⚠ unlike the 23 W model, which loses 13.9%.
• ⭐ CRI ≥90 is what earns the fitting its place in a shop — ⭐ fabric, food, timber and skin all read wrong under CRI 80.

⭐ Setting out a surface fitting

⭐⭐ ALIGNMENT SHOWS FAR MORE THAN IT DOES RECESSED. ⭐ A recessed fitting 20 mm out of line is barely noticed; a projecting cylinder out of line is obvious from across the room. ⭐ Set out from a datum line rather than measuring each from the nearest wall, and check the run by eye along the ceiling before fixing. ⭐ On an exposed-services ceiling, align them to the services rather than to the walls — the eye reads the two together and a fitting square to the wall but skewed to the duct above it looks wrong.

⭐ 15°, 24°, 36°, 45° and 60°, with 36° standard — unusual where most downlights offer one. ⭐ From a 3 m ceiling to a 1 m surface, a 36° beam lights about 1.3 m across and a 60° about 2.3 m. ⭐ Choose from the object, not the room. ⭐ The driver is flicker-free, which in retail matters beyond comfort: flicker is what makes phone footage of a shop look poor. ⭐ Confirm the dimmer type with us — a mismatched dimmer is the usual cause of flicker on an otherwise sound fitting.
