The Domus SANDS is an open-slat timber pendant in natural plywood — Ø440 mm, 300 mm high, taking one E27 globe to 25 W, on a 1,500 mm suspension.

What an open-slat shade actually does

This is the reason to buy a SANDS rather than a solid pendant:

• ✅ Light escapes between the slats and throws a striped pattern onto the ceiling and the walls around it. Lit, the room gains texture the pendant itself does not have.
• ✅ The timber glows from within where light passes close to it, warming the colour as it goes.
• ⚠ It is not a directed light. Most of the output goes sideways and up rather than down onto a table. If you want a bright pool on a dining surface, this is the wrong shade — use it for the atmosphere and add downlights for the table.
• ⚠ It needs something to catch the pattern. In the middle of a large room with a distant ceiling, most of the effect is lost.

Choosing the globe — and this genuinely changes the result

• A clear filament globe — a small bright point source, so the slat shadows land sharp and graphic. The dramatic choice, and what an open-slat shade is designed around. ⚠ It also means the filament is visible through the gaps, so use a decorative globe worth looking at.
• A frosted or opal globe — a larger, softer source, so the stripes land diffuse and gentle. Calmer, and the better choice over a table where people sit close.
• Warm 2700 K either way. Natural plywood is a warm honey material, and a cool globe makes it look grey.
• 25 W maximum — with LED you will use 5–9 W.

⚠ It does not change colour, whatever our record says

Our data flags this product as having colour-changing technology. It has no electronics at all — it is a timber shade on an E27 lampholder. The colour is whatever globe you fit, and changing it means changing the globe.

Hanging it

• 1,500 mm of suspension supplied, shortened at installation.
• Over a table or island: 750–900 mm above the surface.
• In a walkway: 2.1 m clear to the bottom of the shade.
• ✅ At Ø440 mm it is a substantial pendant — large enough to work as a single fitting over a small table, or in a pair over an island.
• ⚠ Our dimension record disagrees with itself, giving Ø440 mm alongside a width and length of 460 mm. If clearance is tight, ask us to confirm the true diameter before you order.
