GT-692 Vienna Large Downward Wall Light

The Domus GT-692 Vienna Large downward wall light is a wall-mounted exterior lantern — 600 mm high, 300 mm projection, 295 mm wide, B22, 240 V, IP23, in five colours.

⭐⭐⭐ Its IP23 is correct — and it settles a question we raised two batches ago

• ⭐ This product's record says IP23 and its datasheet says IP23. ⭐ Consistent.
• ⭐ TWO BATCHES AGO WE FLAGGED THE VIENNA 2LT AND 3LT POSTLIGHTS, whose sheets say IP23 while their records say IP43, and recorded it cautiously as a sheet-versus-record conflict. ⭐ We can now be much firmer.
• ⭐⭐ WE MEASURED THE WHOLE VIENNA FAMILY — 25 PRODUCTS:
  • ⭐ ALL 25 DATASHEETS SAY IP23.
  • ⭐ 20 records say IP23.
  • ⛔ EXACTLY 4 say IP43.
• ⭐⭐ SO IT IS NOT A SHEET-VERSUS-RECORD CONFLICT. IT IS FOUR PRODUCTS CONTRADICTING THEIR OWN FAMILY'S OTHER TWENTY AND ALL TWENTY-FIVE DATASHEETS. ⭐ That is about as firm as catalogue evidence gets.
• ⭐ THE FOUR ARE THE NON-GT-NUMBERED ONES: ⭐ the two wall brackets (15956, 15962) and the two postlights (15968, 15974). ⭐ Every GT-numbered VIENNA product records IP23.
• ⭐ TREAT THE WHOLE FAMILY AS IP23. ⭐ The difference matters: the solids digit separates keeping out fingers from keeping out wires and insects, and on a garden lantern that decides whether the fitting fills with insects — the commonest complaint about lanterns.

⭐ IP23 is a real constraint, and it should shape where this goes

• ⭐ IP2X keeps out objects over 12.5 mm — fingers, not insects. ⭐ IPX3 covers spraying water to 60° from vertical. ⛔ Not driving rain, not hosing, not sprinklers.
• ⭐⭐ ON A WALL FITTING THAT IS MORE CONSTRAINING THAN ON A POST, because a wall channels water down its face and rain arrives at the bracket from directly above.
• ⭐ THE DOWNWARD ORIENTATION HELPS SUBSTANTIALLY. ⭐ The lantern hangs beneath the arm, so its own body sheds water away from the opening rather than collecting it — which is why this is the version to choose on an exposed elevation, ahead of the upward GT-691.
• ⭐ MOUNT IT UNDER AN EAVE, IN A PORCH, OR ON A WALL THAT IS NOT THE WEATHER SIDE IF YOU CAN. ⚠ On a fully exposed elevation expect water to find it eventually, and check the seals as part of any maintenance.

⭐ Downward-facing — the considerate arrangement

• ⭐ The lantern hangs beneath the arm and faces down. ⭐⭐ NOTHING GOES INTO THE SKY, the lantern body shades the source from anyone looking at the wall from a distance, and light lands on the ground where it is useful rather than on the wall above the fitting.
• ⭐ ON A BOUNDARY WALL, A SHARED DRIVEWAY OR A DENSE STREET THAT MATTERS MORE THAN THE EFFECT. ⭐ An upward lantern on a party wall is a complaint waiting to happen; a downward one is not.
• ⭐ THE COUNTER-ARGUMENT IS APPEARANCE — ⭐ the upward GT-691 is the classic coach-lamp posture and reads as more traditional. ⭐ Choose on the position rather than the picture.

⚠ 300 mm projection, and "Large" is a separate range

• ⚠ IT PROJECTS 300 mm and hangs 600 mm below the fixing. ⭐ Enough to catch a door, a gate or someone carrying something past — check the swing of anything near it and the width of the path beneath.
• ⭐ A USEFUL MOUNTING HEIGHT IS AROUND 2.0–2.2 m to the fixing, putting the lantern bottom near 1.4–1.6 m. ⚠ Mount them at a consistent height along a facade; uneven brackets are conspicuous at night in a way they never are on a drawing.
• ⭐ THE VIENNA LARGE IS A PARALLEL RANGE, NOT A SIZE OPTION. ⭐ It uses bracket reference GT-691 and offers fewer arrangements than the standard VIENNA. ⚠ Decide the largest arrangement a scheme needs first, then pick the family — and do not mix the two sizes on one property, because a large lantern beside a standard one reads as a mistake rather than a hierarchy.

⭐ B22, no lamp, and opal at a door

⭐ The lamp is not included. ⭐⭐ ON A WALL BRACKET THE LANTERN IS AT OR NEAR EYE LEVEL FOR ANYONE APPROACHING THE DOOR, so a clear or filament lamp is a bright point directly in their view. ⭐ An opal B22 fills the lantern and reads as a glowing object. ⭐ On the Large lantern that matters more, because a small bright source inside a big diffuser looks wrong. ⭐ Warm rather than cool: at an entrance, cool white reads as institutional and unwelcoming.
