⛔ Its title and its product type both say the wrong thing

• ⭐ The title is “SURFACE EMERGENCY D63 RECESS” — shared with the recessed version. ⭐ Its product type is filed as “Emergency Recess”. ⛔ This is the surface-mounted fitting.
• ⭐ THE DIMENSIONS SETTLE IT. ⭐ A 180 × 180 mm plate and an 80 mm height describe something that sits on a ceiling. ⭐ The recessed sibling has an adjustable 95/145 mm dish and a 34 mm depth — a fitting that goes into a hole.

⭐ When a surface-mounted emergency light is the right choice

• ⭐ THE OBVIOUS CASE IS A CEILING YOU CANNOT CUT. ⭐ Concrete soffits, fire-rated ceilings, and ceilings with services immediately above are all positions where a recessed fitting is either impossible or requires work that costs more than the light.
• ⭐ ON A FIRE-RATED CEILING IT IS MORE THAN CONVENIENCE. ⭐ Cutting a hole in a rated ceiling breaches the rating unless the penetration is made good to the same standard, which on an emergency fitting is an awkward combination of trades. ⭐ Surface mounting avoids the question entirely.
• ⭐ IT IS ALSO THE FASTER RETROFIT. ⭐ No hole, no dust, no plaster patching, no ceiling access needed above. ⭐ On an occupied building where the ceiling cannot be disturbed, that is often decisive.
• ⚠ THE COST IS THAT IT IS VISIBLE. ⭐ An 80 mm-deep 180 mm square on a ceiling reads as equipment where a recessed fitting reads as a small disc. ⭐ In a back-of-house corridor that is irrelevant; in a reception it is not.

⭐ D63, and the spacing it buys

⭐ The classification under AS2293.3 is D63. ⭐ The number is a spacing basis: it tells a designer how far apart these can sit and still meet the required floor illuminance. ⭐⭐ THAT DRIVES THE COST OF AN EMERGENCY SCHEME MORE THAN THE LUMEN FIGURE DOES — ⭐ fewer fittings means less cabling, less testing and less maintenance for the life of the building. ⭐ Your certifier will work from the spacing tables rather than from the classification number alone.

⭐ A large terminal, which sounds trivial and is not

⭐ The sheet specifies a large terminal, PA16. ⭐⭐ ON A SURFACE-MOUNTED FITTING THAT IS A GENUINE INSTALLATION ADVANTAGE. ⭐ The cable enters from behind and terminates inside a shallow body, often at arm's length above head height, and a cramped terminal block is where that job goes slowly. ⭐ Across a building with dozens of emergency fittings, terminal size is one of the few specifications that actually changes the install time.

⭐ Four years including the battery, and polarity protection

⭐ The warranty is 4 years including the battery — ⭐ notable because the battery is the consumable on an emergency fitting and is commonly excluded. ⭐ The range also offers polarity reversal protection, which isolates the battery on jobs where site power is repeatedly switched off before handover. ⭐ A battery cycled through a long build arrives at commissioning already degraded, and this avoids it.

⭐ Non-maintained, and an adaptor plate for larger holes

⭐ Non-maintained means dark in normal use, lit only when the mains fails — ⭐ the normal choice for corridors and back-of-house. ⭐ The range includes an adaptor plate for larger holes, ⭐ which on this surface version means it can also cover an existing recessed cutout left by a fitting being replaced. ⭐ That is a useful retrofit path: take out an old recessed emergency light and cover the hole with this rather than patching it.
