INDIO 4 LIGHT PENDANT

The Indio PE4 is a 500 mm four-light pendant in black, with an adjustable octagonal frame in wood and iron — four E14 globes to 25 W each, not supplied, on a 2,000 mm suspension.

The frame adjusts — which almost nothing else here does

The Indio's octagonal frame is adjustable. That is genuinely unusual: nearly every pendant in this catalogue arrives in one shape and stays in it. Being able to change the frame's geometry means the same fitting can be set flatter and wider over a table, or tighter and taller in an entry — and adjusted again later if the room changes around it.

Wood and iron — and the record listed no material at all

Our product record carried no material field whatsoever. The Indio is wood and iron, and the combination is the whole style: the iron gives the frame its lines and the wood gives it warmth and grain, which is what separates French provincial from plain industrial. An all-iron version of the same octagon would read as a cage; the timber stops it.

500 by 500 mm, and 3.7 kilograms

Square in proportion — 500 mm across and 500 mm high — which suits the octagonal geometry: it reads as a solid form rather than a lantern. At 3.7 kg it is heavy for its size, because solid timber and iron are, so it needs a proper ceiling fixing rather than a plasterboard rose. The canopy projects only 25 mm, so the ceiling end stays discreet.

Four globes, and they are visible through an open frame

Four E14 to 25 W each — 100 W in total, none supplied. The frame is open, so the globes show. That makes them part of the design:

• Decorative LED candle or golf-ball globes, not bare capsules.
• Warm — 2700 K, to sit with the timber. Cool white against wood looks wrong.
• Four matching globes. On an open frame, mismatched ones are unmistakable.

• Over dining tables and islands — set the frame flatter and wider.
• Entries and hallways — set it tighter and taller.
• Rooms with timber, linen and painted joinery.
