DOVER 56 PENDANT

The Dover PE56 is a 560 mm eight-light pendant in black or antique silver, with an iron frame over a fabric inner shade — eight E14 globes to 25 W each, not supplied, on a 2,000 mm suspension.

An iron cage over a fabric drum — the reason to buy it

The Dover is two shades in one. The outer is an open iron frame; inside it sits a fabric drum that does the actual diffusing. What that produces is unusual and it is the whole point:

• The fabric hides every globe, so there is no glare and no bright points, however many lamps are inside.
• The iron frame throws a shadow pattern onto the ceiling and walls around it, because the light passes through the cage on its way out.

So it reads as a soft glowing drum inside a graphic outline. A plain fabric pendant gives you the first without the second; an open cage gives you the second with glare.

Eight globes — and what that is really for

Eight E14 to 25 W each — 200 W in total, none supplied. Eight lamps behind a fabric shade are not there for brightness so much as for evenness: at 900 mm tall and 560 mm across, three or four globes would light the drum unevenly and show as bright patches through the fabric. Eight fills it.

900 mm tall — check your ceiling first

560 mm across and 900 mm high, on a 2,000 mm adjustable suspension. That height is the thing to plan around: it is nearly a metre of fitting before you count the drop. Over a dining table, hung so the bottom sits about 750 mm above the surface, it works on a standard ceiling — but in an entry or a walkway it will hang into head height unless the ceiling is tall.

Black or antique silver

Black makes the cage graphic — a hard outline around a soft glow, and the shadow pattern on the ceiling is crisp. Antique silver is weathered rather than polished, so the frame catches light unevenly along its length and reads softer and older. On a fitting this size that is a genuinely different room.

• Over large dining tables — 560 mm needs the room.
• High-ceilinged entries and stairwells, where 900 mm has space.
• Rooms where a shadow pattern on the ceiling is wanted.
