Icaria Ceramic Table Lamp

The Icaria TL is a 490 mm table lamp with a textured ceramic base and a white fabric shade — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied — in gold or silver.

Textured ceramic in a gloss glaze

Two finishes doing opposite things, deliberately. The base is textured — relief moulded into the ceramic — and then gloss glazed in gold or silver. Gloss on a flat surface is a mirror and shows every mark; gloss over texture breaks the reflection into highlights, so the base catches light without throwing a hard shine. That is what makes it read as metallic-and-handmade rather than as plated plastic.

Gold or silver, and they suit different rooms

Gold is the warm one — it commits a room to warmth, and sits with brass, timber and cream. Silver is cooler than gold and warmer than chrome, and against a white shade it stays neutral, which is what lets it work in both modern and traditional rooms. If you are undecided, silver is the safer choice.

A tall lamp on a narrow base

490 mm tall with a 180 mm shade on a 105 mm base. That is a slim, upright proportion — the shade is small relative to the height, so the lamp reads as elegant rather than substantial and takes very little surface. It suits a narrow console, a dresser or a bedside table with little room. The trade is that a 180 mm shade spreads less light than a 280 mm one, so this is an accent lamp more than a reading lamp.

Dimming depends on the globe

Fit a dimmable E27 and use a plug-in or inline dimmer and it dims; a plain globe will not. Our record says “No”, which is misleading — the correct answer is globe dependent. On a gloss lamp dimming is worth doing: at full brightness the glaze reflects hard, and dimmed it softens considerably.
