Cast stone — and the record said “fabric”

The body is cast stone, and our product record listed “Fabric” alone — recording the shade and losing the lamp. It is the seventh cast-stone product in this catalogue whose record drops the stone.

Cast stone is heavy, faintly granular and reads as quarried rather than moulded. On a lamp of this scale — 400 mm wide at the base of the form — it gives a solidity and matte earthiness that a ceramic glaze or a painted metal base cannot, and it is the entire reason to choose a Fulvia over a cheaper lamp of the same silhouette.

4.3 kilograms, and that is the point

Heavy. Most table lamps in this catalogue weigh under a kilogram — the Nativa is 0.89 kg. The Fulvia is 4.3 kg, which means it does not move when the flex is pulled and does not tip when knocked. On a hallway console, or anywhere a bag or a sleeve goes past, that is the difference between a lamp that survives and one that does not.

Generously scaled — 400 mm wide, 635 mm high

This is a large table lamp, not a bedside one. At 635 mm it stands well above a seated eye line, so the shade throws light down onto a surface and up onto the ceiling rather than into your face — and at 400 mm wide it needs a console, a sideboard or a wide side table to sit on. On a narrow bedside table it will overwhelm the furniture.

The fabric shade, and choosing a globe

Fabric and opaque, so light goes up and down, not sideways, and the globe is completely hidden. That makes the choice simple — brightness and warmth only. A warm 2700 K E27 suits the beige and the stone.
