Argos Table Lamp

The Argos TL is a 560 mm table lamp with a cylindrical fabric shade on a warm metallic frame — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied — in antique gold with black or antique gold with ivory.

A cylinder, not a cone — and it changes the light

The shade is a true cylinder: 180 mm wide and 210 mm high, the same at top and bottom. A cone throws light downward in a widening pool; a cylinder throws it up and down in equal measure, in two straight columns. On a console or a sideboard that means the lamp lights the wall behind it as well as the surface below, which is what makes a cylindrical shade look taller and more architectural than it is.

Black or ivory — the same frame, two different lamps

The antique gold frame is common to both, so what you choose is the shade:

• Black — opaque and graphic. Almost no light through the shade, so you get two clean columns of light and a dark form between them. The dramatic choice.
• Ivory — the fabric glows, so the shade itself becomes a soft light source as well as directing light up and down. The warmer, quieter choice, and the one for a bedside.

Tall and light

560 mm tall on a 120 mm base, and only 0.93 kg. That is light for its height — a fabric shade on a slim metal frame is nearly all air — so on a narrow console or a shelf it will move if it is knocked. If you want weight at a bedside, the ceramic and marble lamps in this range are the ones.

Dimming depends on the globe

Fit a dimmable E27 and use a plug-in or inline dimmer and it dims; a plain globe will not. Our record says “No”, which is misleading — the correct answer is globe dependent. On the ivory shade dimming is particularly worth having: at low output the fabric is what you see.

One of a range of five

Argos runs as a wall light, a table lamp and three pendant sizes, all with the same cylindrical shade in the same two colours on the same antique gold. A room can carry the same shade at three heights, which is a stronger result than three coordinating fittings.
