Amador Table Lamp

The Amador is a 385 mm cast stone table lamp in beige with a fabric shade — one E27 globe to 25 W, not supplied, on 1.8 metres of flex, at 1.8 kg.

Cast stone — and our record did not mention it

The base is cast stone: a moulded composite of crushed stone and binder, not a quarried block. That is worth understanding properly, because it is the whole product and because this catalogue also contains real quarried travertine lamps, which are a different thing.

• It has the surface and the density of stone. A matt, slightly porous, faintly granular finish that light falls into rather than bouncing off — which is why a stone lamp reads soft where a painted one reads flat.
• It is consistent. Unlike quarried stone, a cast piece has no dramatic veining or banding, so yours will look like the photograph — which is an advantage if you are buying a pair, and a limitation if you wanted the drama of natural stone.
• It gives weight low down. At 1.8 kg on a 385 mm lamp, the mass sits at the base where it does the most good.
• ⚠ It can chip. Like any stone, a cast base marks if it goes over or knocks a hard edge — keep it back from the edge of a narrow table.

385 mm — genuinely compact, and that is the point

The description calls it “compact and versatile”, and the figures bear it out. Against the other table lamps in this catalogue:

It is the smallest table lamp we have measured, which makes it right for places the larger ones do not fit:

• A narrow or crowded bedside table, where a 500 mm lamp dominates.
• A bookshelf or shelf run, under a fixed shelf above.
• A hallway console, where depth is limited.
• In pairs, either side of a bed — two small lamps read better than two large ones, and at 1.8 kg each they are stable enough to leave.

Beige — and why the colour is doing work

Soft beige cast stone is deliberately quiet. It suits neutral, coastal and contemporary Australian interiors — all built on natural materials in muted tones, where texture does the work colour does elsewhere.

Against a timber sideboard, a linen headboard or a limewashed wall, a beige stone lamp reads as part of the room. A black metal lamp in the same place reads as a fixture placed on it.

One E27 to 25 W, not supplied. Nothing shows through the fabric shade, so brightness and warmth are the only decisions.
