Curva White LED Step Light

This is the largest Curva finished in white — and the detail worth knowing is what is underneath it. The sheet lists the material as solid brass with a poly powder coated white finish, so this is not a painted steel fitting. That has a practical consequence on a step light, which is the fitting in any garden most likely to be kicked: when the coating is eventually marked, what shows through is brass, and brass does not rust.

Why white on a step light

White is the finish for rendered, painted or light stone walls, where a dark fitting reads as a spot on the wall during the day and competes with the thing it is meant to be lighting at night. On pale masonry a white Curva effectively disappears until it is switched on, which is usually the intention. On dark brick or bluestone the opposite applies and one of the brass or black finishes will sit better.

Wiring it

It runs on 12 V DC constant voltage and needs a constant-voltage driver — a constant-current unit will not run it correctly. Wiring is parallel and the fitting is Protection Class 3, no earth required. At 7.5 W, six fittings draw 45 W, so size the driver above the total with headroom, site it to suit its own IP rating, and on a long run feed from near the middle rather than one end so the last fitting does not dim from voltage drop.

Dimming

The Curva is Triac dimmable. Because it runs at 12 V DC the dimming happens upstream at the driver, so the driver must itself be a Triac-dimmable 12 V DC constant-voltage unit and the wall dimmer a compatible leading-edge type. At 650 lm this is worth specifying rather than skipping — it is a bright fitting, and being able to bring it down matters more here than on the 3 W model.

Specifying it

The 7.5 W LED is built in — no globe, no socket. Tri-colour switching across 3000 K, 4000 K and 5500 K gives 600 lm, 650 lm and 625 lm, set once at installation; the middle setting is the brightest of the three, so pick on colour rather than reading it as a ladder. IP65 covers direct rain and hose wash-down, IK06 handles the occasional impact, and the diffuser is frosted glass. CRI above 80.

Lights For You carries the Curva in white, black, natural brass and antique brass. On a white fitting, set the colour temperature before installation — a warm setting behind a white body reads noticeably softer than the same setting behind brass.
